Possible tumor on Ginger's leg [UPDATE at bottom!]
Rusty found this on Ginger's elbow yesterday:
It's the red bit right by my thumb. The other part is a healing callous from before we got her.
I did some reading and searching and found that age plays a major part in what it most likely is. This kind of thing seen in older dogs could be a mast cell tumor, which is malignant. When it's a younger dog, like Ginger, it usually is a histiocytoma which is a benign tumor.
Histiocytomas usually go away on their own in a month or so. That's, obviously, what I'm hoping it is. I was driving myself crazy last night looking at pictures of tumors. To ease my fears a little, I emailed my Vet, Dr. Gurtman from Towne Line Veterinary group in Hauppauge. I don't know what I expected, since I'll be calling the office this morning anyway for an appointment. I sent the email and went to bed.
Not only did he answer my email two hours after I sent it, but he did it while on vacation! I love this guy. He said it looks like a histiocytoma too, and that's what the overwhelming majority of growths are, especially on a dog as young as Ginger.
I'm making the appt anyway in his absence so if you could think good thoughts for us, I would appreciate it.
Also, does anyone have experience with this by chance? Thanks.

Poor Ginger! But seriously - Dr. Gurtman is the BEST. His responsiveness is one of the main reasons why I am so happy we wound up there and why I recommend him to everyone I know.
I don't have experience with that particular type of tumor, but my family dog (black lab) was prone to all sorts of tumors. Some cancerous, some not. I started calling him Lumpy as a nickname because as he got older it was no longer worth putting him through surgery to remove the ones that were not cancer.
And in the end, he is about to turn 15 - I don't think he has much time left, unfortunately, but that is a LONG life for a lab, so clearly the tumors were never a real danger to him.
Of course Amber and I will send good thoughts your way too, but I am confident Ginger will be just fine!

Don't research online, it was the worse mistake when my pup was sick last week. Hope everything works out at the vet.

Re: Possible tumor on Ginger's leg [pic]
You guys are great. I appreciate it more than you know.
The covering doctor did a fully exam, said with these types of things that they're iffy until they get tests done. I opted to have them do a fine needle aspiration of cells which may or may not provide us with an answer. He said sometimes the blood in the sample can occlude the results but that Ginger really didn't bleed much. He showed me the slides with the samples he took. He understood without me saying so that although all I was looking at were glass pieces with smudges on them, they made me feel better about being involved in the process.
We will find out by Friday or latest Monday if there are definitive results. If it's a benign tumor, we can apply creams or soak in epsom salts and it should go away on it's own. And at the very least, if we see one again, we can opt for this route before jumping to aspirations and biopsies.
If it's the other kind, I don't even want to think about it because it's in a bad spot.
My girl was so brave and Brinkley was a very supportive brother.
By the way Megan... Not only was Dr. Gurtman on vacation, he's in Hawaii!! I would never expect that kind of dedication, but it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside to know that he's our Vet. If only I could find a GP that was that good!!
Thanks again everyone.

Seriously!!
I hope that the tests turn up benign! If something else happens though I am sure they can take care of it. My family dog had a similar tumor removed from around his ankle and it went very well despite the location.
Good luck!

Re: Possible tumor on Ginger's leg [UPDATE at bottom!]
It's a Histiocytoma, a benign tumor, YAY!!
I'm so glad we decided to go for the test, I would have been thinking about it constantly, waiting to see what would happen to it.
I didn't know how worried I was until they called this morning. I'm SO relieved.
