That poor girl in Long Beach...
The one that drowned while on a class field trip... I cannot understand how a school-sanctioned trip would allow them to be on a beach where there were no lifeguards on duty??
Maybe I'm just not aware of the details but this just screams negligent and careless to me.

Re: That poor girl in Long Beach...
i work for the DOE and im so confused about this. i thought there was a rule that you cannot take a trip to a body of water. especially kids that cannot swim with no lifeguards on duty. the parents must have signed permission slips to go. i feel so bad for that girl's family.

Re: That poor girl in Long Beach...
It boggles my mind that a school would even take a trip to the ocean at all and with only 3 chaperones.

this makes me SO ANGRY.
and the interview.."we pulled out a lot of kids but we couldn't get to her"
really.
fdsjklfhsdagjkhajklghlk
what kind of effing gd moron allows CHILDREN to swim in the OCEAN when there is NO LIFE GUARD PRESENT.
especially if it's NOT YOUR OWN. that is NOT YOUR DECISION TO MAKE.
I swear. I was just thinking about going to the beach with Luce and imagining him being swept out of my arms by a strong current the ocean can be DANGEROUS!!! RESPECT IT
for that poor girl and her family.

God. This kills me.
And people wonder why I get freaked out by school trips where I am not around.
THIS is why.

Re: That poor girl in Long Beach...
It is absolutely awful and happens way too much, unfortunately. First of all, as others of you have said, I cannot believe that a school trip would be to the beach...a beach with no lifeguards on duty!!!! Part of the problem with the rash of drownings in Long Beach(this is the 2nd this season already,) is that people try to save a buck and go before the beaches are officially open so they don't have to pay - so no lifeguards. Every single summer there are multiple drownings in LB, every single summer it happens when the lifeguards are OFF duty (free beach,) and every single summer, the victim is someone from the five boroughs. I kid you not. As a local, now unfortunately just a summer local, I really feel that people who do not grow up at or near the water don't have the same fear or respect for it. I have no other idea why the victim would always be someone from the boroughs. Growing up in Long Beach, water safety and knowledge are just part of life. I remember as far back as early elementary school, lifeguards coming to do presentations on water safety. In 2nd grade, we went, during the school day, every week, for swimming lessons at the recreation center. It was part of school! LBHS has a huge pool and you were required to either pass the swim test or take a full semester of swimming lessons.
It's a sad sad thing. It truly is.
ETA - I am starting swimming lessons for DS this September at 7 months old.

I believe this is true. I am from the boroughs and our beaches (Brighton and Coney) are NOTHING in terms of current when put up against LI beaches.
I am not sure about the school districts closer to the shore in Brooklyn, but in my district (in Park Slope...near water but no swimming beaches) we were never taught and I think it is IMPERITIVE.

I completely agree with what you wrote and agree with you that the school shouldn't have a field trip to a beach where the lifeguards aren't on duty. Even if it was an ecology trip where going in the water wasn't expected, it was unsafe.
Also if this was on the North Shore, I wouldn't have thought twice about having a field trip with lifeguards on or off duty. Long Beach & the South Shore is a completely different body of water.
Poor family.

I was just thinking this same thing...I know how many times I have been knocked over by waves at the shoreline. I cannot imagine how I would handle that holding an 8 month old
