PUMPING moms-- MUST READ- Horn/Phlange sizing
Figured I'd post this. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING A CORRECT PHLANGE SIZE!!!
Most pumps come with a 28 mm phlange but that doesn't work for all women. I needed a 40 mm!!!
Here is a great diagram to make sure your phlange sizes are correct.
Phlange sizing
Your nipple should move freely in the pump. Incorrect sizing can lead to damage to the nipple and surrounding tissue and you won't pump milk as effectively.
Also, when you are pumping you can use a little bit of olive oil on the nipples and areola for lubrication. Makes a HUGE difference!
Pumping, just like a correctly latched baby SHOULD NOT HURT.... If it hurts you are doing something wrong. Either your phlanges are not sized correctly, you need some lubrication (olive oil) or the pump is turned on too high.
To help let down more milk you can try using a heating pad on your chest for about 10 min before and while pumping do breast compressions
Hope this helps!

Re: PUMPING moms-- MUST READ- Horn/Phlange sizing
thanks for posting this! I have been exclusively pumping for 9 months and my nipples are a mess. I did purchase larger horns many months ago because of sore/blsitery nipples, but I guess they're not big enough because my nipples are still very sore and cracked and pretty much destroyed. I do however pump enough milk to feed DS, but after seeing the photo of how it should fit, I now know that I need to buy larger ones.

Get some larger ones and I hope your boobies feel better. Try the olive oil as well!

Re: PUMPING moms-- MUST READ- Horn/Phlange sizing
Thanks Maria! I could have definitely used the pictures when I first started pumping - I was DEFINITELY using one that was too small.
My problem is that now I think I'm using one that's too big... would that cause problems too? I assume to, but I've been pumping fine and my nipples don't hurt anymore (although I'm not sure if that's just because they got used to it).

If its too big it won't provide enough suction and you won't get enough milk out!

Another thing, you CAN be different sizes on each side!
I actually got m, l, xl, xxl, depending on what fit best at the time. So much change that my body went through, it really helped to have the different sizes avail.

Yup! and you can start off one size and change while your breasts adjust.
The important thing is CHECK YOUR FIT!!!
Will make pumping sooo much better!

Re: PUMPING moms-- MUST READ- Horn/Phlange sizing
Its funny, I think that phlange size is subjective....I was pumping 20 oz a day and up using phlanges that were too small, I got some bigger ones and my milk supply started to decrease within about 2 days, so I don't think the correct size thing is necessarily true for everyone. I was a prolific pumper for 8 months, 8 horrible months!

Yeah, same here!!!
Although I don't feel the smaller size affected me very much...I also had an AWESOME supply and would pump anywhere from 5-10 oz. in a session, depending on the time of day.
BUT, good to know that if I have another DC, I need to invest in bigger phlanges! I could be pumping even more!
