OMG I am about as mature as an 11 year old boy when it comes to bathroom humor so you could imagine how hard I am laughing reading this.
However, I want to know- what on EARTH is in these things that make people get the runs so bad?
I eat sugar substitute all the time- Splenda, Crystal Light, etc., and I have a BAD stomach and I never get this reaction.
This has to be something different in them....

I do not remember what it was called but during the Atkins craze several of us were doing it and one of my co-workers gave me a bag of sour patch type candies. I thought I was going to die. For the life of me I don't recall what the stuff was called- it was some kind of sugar alcohol- but I had and still have never had an issue with Splenda, etc.
These reviews were hysterical.

Malitol!!! I used to work in a chocolate store and we had to warn customers who were buying sugar free chocolate.
On an aside, my dad is diabetic, but doesnt believe he is. He wanted ice cream so I went to friendly's and got him sugar free ice cream and sugar free hot fudge. Let's just say he had a rough 24 hours afterwards. He didnt speak to me for a week. ooops!

It was probably the sugar alcohols, they have a laxative effect!
On a side note, this is FREAKING HYSTERICAL. "I heard the distinctive 'ching' of the penny I swallowed in '82"

I remember they had something called Olean or Olestra a few years back- they were using it in diet Potato Chips and Doritos for a while. It was like a fat substitute that caused a large percentage of the population to get the runs, etc.
I tried it and it never affected me, but apparently it affected a lot of people. I think they stopped using it.
This reminds me of that.
