You’ve made the decision to add to your family and now that the “adoptions” is complete, the reality that you’ll have to take care of your new family member for the rest of both your lives is beginning to set in. Let’s fact it, besides being “cute” you want your “baby” to be healthy. And that means finding the right vet. And, according to experts, it’s best to have one lined up before you need one.
Experts note that a key factor in choosing a pet practitioner is finding one that believes in continuing education. As they put it, “a good doctor never stops learning”. They also note that most reputable vets have worked at AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accredited clinics that allow you to view and review their credentials and educational background online. Note that a host of internships a residencies received multiple bonus points. It’s also a good idea to look for an ABVP after the vet’s name, denoting extra work he or she completed to get an accredidation by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. Last, but certainly not least, pet parents should also look into location.
So, bottom line is: Follow these three steps when choosing a vet
1. Pay a visit to healthypet.com and do a search for an American Animal Hospital Association-accredited clinic close to you
2. Go to abvp.com and click on “Find a Diplomate” to find a vet that’s certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP)
3. Ask for referrals of board-certified specialists, especially for pet that need special attention.
