It comes as no surprise that those of us with pets consider them part of our family. And, often times treat them as such; even to the point of pampering them with “spa” treatments, fancy foods, and even personal hygiene items and trendy attire. But, all too often when it comes to the mental and physical health of our pets, we often fall short. And, with that said, experts assert that monitoring what they eat and making sure they get plenty of (love) and exercise. And, these are three reasons why.
1. Pups Are Packing On The Pounds: Just like their owners, whose busy lifestyle has left them with less time for exercise and eating right, our pooches are following in our footsteps. They too are eating bigger portions and getting less (outdoor) exercise and packing on the pounds. Experts note that the more we get out of shape the more our pets do the same, experiencing almost identical health issues and complications of a sedentary lifestyle characterized by complications of being overweight and obese, including heart disease, diabetes, joint ailments and increased risk of cancer.
2. Boosting Health And Fitness: Dogs, like humans NEED a healthy lifestyle to stay healthy and live longer. And, that translates into 15 to 20 minutes of physical activity three times a day. While playing Frisbee or fetch are two options, experts say the best bet for both of you is a nice brisk walk.
3. Offers Incentive For You Too: While you may not have the time or energy to hit the gym, you’ll likely want to spend some time with your pet. Dogs are always up for a walk and sometimes they just NEED “to go”, which means YOU have to take them out of the house and out for a walk. And, that means the “perfect excuse” for you get up and moving as well….making dogs make the ultimate “exercise” partner
