Everyone warns you NOT to be or become a welcome mat. Hence this household essential gets a bad name and a bad reputation. Yet, according to experts doormats are “mandatory” for helping keep your home free of dirt and germs.

While they’ve become much more aesthetically appealing over the years, their main purpose is guarding you and your home for the elements, much of which can be dragged in via the bottom of your shoes. In fact, it gets accolades from the Environmental Protection Agency for also helping to keep the air in your home clean.

For best results and protection experts suggest a mat on either side of the door. Use outdoor mats to wipe off snow, salt, mud, ice, pesticides and other outdoor items you otherwise would drudge in. Make sure the outside mat is sturdy and durable and can withstand both the elements and persistent wiping of your feet.

Indoor mats should be used to help clean up the last bits of debris that are on your shoes or boots. Experts suggest looking for one that stylish but absorbent and possibly designed to withstand the outdoor dirt and boot drainage.

Experts suggest picking a mat that works for you, you home and your personality. They note that there are many varieties to choose from including rubber mats, recycled mats, plastic mats and many more. Just remember, that no matter what type of mat you choose, it should be able to do its job and do it well.

Just remember not experts, if you want you mat to remain effective its up to you to keep it clean. Make sure to routinely sweep it, brush it off, shake it out, or rinse it off. They add that its imperative to keep mats relatively clean and free of continually accumulated debris and dirt. Indoor mats also need TLC and should be swept, dusted off or vacuumed regularly.
