Board games have moved up a notch by adding DVDs and electronics. And people must like them, because board game sales are up big time.
A Business Week survey of retailers and gamers shows that Mattel's "Scene It?" is one of the most popular. The movie trivia game has players answering questions on cards, but they have movie clips and DVD graphics played on their TV to help them.
Another game using the same idea is Hasbro's "Trivial Pursuit Pop Culture" DVD game. Their top-selling Trivial Pursuit 20th Anniversary Edition has questions from the past 20 years on a wider range of subjects.
The electronic version of Hasbro's "Clue," "Clue FX," is another winner. It has some new characters in the mystery, but characters such as Colonel Mustard are still included.
Other big sellers include "I'm the Boss!" which is an electronic game where players negotiate and round up investors to close deals. "Apples to Apples Crate Edition" is still a big seller. The new games cost between $30 and $50.
