For those of us “mature” enough to remember blackboards rather than computer screens in classrooms, chances are you’ll also recall when blackboards were transformed (in colour only) to greenboards, since green was considered more “soothing” to and less stressful on the eyes.
Well, now thanks to modern technology, our eyes seem to have a new strain of strain to deal with….and whether you’re still in school, at work, or even at home, it likely has to do with computers and starring at a screen all day. And, let’s not forget about the toll taken by the TV and now automated cell phones. And, pun fully intended…I’m sure you’re beginning to see the picture.
So, what can you do to save your eyesight. Well, here are a few “expert” suggestions.
· Clean your computer screen. Industry pros suggest dusting off your screen at least once a week using a soft cloth. Dust, believe it or not can add to eyestrain.
· Location, location, location. Avoid glare by positioning your screen so that you can avoid glare from windows, lamps, etc. You may even want to lower the wattage of the light bulbs you’re currently using.
· Take a “blink” break. Blinking often is not only exercise for your eyes, but relieves the stress from staring at the screen.
· Get a professional opinion. Make an appointment with your doctor and ask about the potential need for glasses that will help during your long hours online.
