My grandmother and use to talk about it, and fondly may I add, but it was a concept, (she proudly referred to as “home work”), that as a byproduct of parents who experienced the 60s revivalist movement and the various revolutions of that era, I simply couldn’t wrap my mind around.
For me, and most of my female friends, getting and education and claiming independence personally, professionally, and financially was “The” golden ticket of success and accomplishment. We studied hard, worked hard, paid our dews and, if we had to, crawled our way up the corporate ladder.
In fact it was our socially conditioned contention that we didn’t “need” a man or a family, but instead would reach a point where we “wanted” both, and when that day came, we’d simply go out and get them, jus like we’d done everything else. And, we continue to support ourselves and the lifestyle we had worked so hard to achieve and gotten use to.
But, some, according to experts, soon discovered that being a “superwife” or “supermom” wasn’t as easy as we were taught that it would be. Remember, the testimonies, even in song, claiming I am woman, I am strong, I am “invincible”, hear me roar, well, statistics show that many of us were more comfortable with more of a “purr” and a more perfect home-life balance.
These are the women that popular-culture is calling the new generation of “career” moms (and some wives) who are seeking out work from home positions. In fact that numbers suggest that work at home women are at 60 percent.
For these ambitious career women, it’s a matter of helping out financially, maintaining their fiscal independence, but having the luxury of taking care of other important areas in their life including home and family.
And, experts say these new work pool is becoming increasingly more appealing to a vast spectrum of companies and employers who no longer have to outsource overseas.
And, its all part of the opportunities created by the Internet and modern technology; including a host of opportunities that also allow these women to work around their other obligations. Among these career options, virtual assistants and live chat customer service support, just to name a few.
