Who says size doesn’t matter, according to recent statistics, it most certainly does. Well, at least when it comes to your waist, that is.
Recent studies reveal that your waist circumference may determine whether or not you’re destined to have a heart attack, one of the most common conditions, killing nearly 17 million people annually, worldwide.
According to findings, if your waist is larger than the following number, experts place you in the high-risk category for the disease.
Men: 40 inches Women: 35 inches
Furthermore, experts emphasize that finding out where you stand only takes about one minute and only requires the use of a measuring tape. They add that because your waist circumference differs from your belt size, it’s important to note the difference between the two, and take accurate measurements for an accurate reading and “diagnosis”. The procedure they recommend is as follows:
· Take off your shirt and loosen your belt.
· Wrap a tape measure around your mid section, placing it approximately 1 cm below your belly button.
· Relax your abdomen and measure while exhaling (breathing out).
Professionals point out that this excess fat (around our middles) is the greatest predictor of our heart health (a fact most don’t know or realize). It has also been linked to high cholesterol, type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
