Spinoff to maternity question...
How exactly does FMLA play into maternity leave? Is everyone entitled to it? Is it something that has to be decided before you go out on maternity leave? Any info would be greatly appreciated! TIA

This FMLA Link has a lot of info, including eligibility and timeframes. If you are planning to use FMLA, talk to your union rep so that you can be sure you get the time you need and that your district does what it needs. It may depend on your district if they allow you to use your accumulated sick days after FMLA or if they need to run concurrently. Ask lots of questions, and if you are not sure, see your union rep (sorry, union lady here )

How exactly would one qualify for FMLA? Does there have to be any extenuating circumstances/complications?

No, FMLA is Federal. There are some things, like you need to be employed at least a year etc., and there are limits to how you take it (you can only take it one time per year, although you can break it up.) etc...

So basically if I have a child at the end of March (or around that time) and I am only granted 6 weeks off (using my sick days) then I can qualify for FMLA to take me to the end of the school year? Does my district still have to provide me with health insurance?

You would be entitled to another 6 weeks under FMLA.
I don't know where you teach, but I teach in NYC and just did all the paperwork for my leave. I am going to be out for about 14 weeks. In NYC FMLA began immediately for me, even though I am still using sick days. When my 12 weeks are up, I will be going on child care leave from the Dept. of Ed. My health insurance will continue under something called SLOAC (Special Leave of Absence Coverage). I am not sure how long SLOAC would otherwise cover me since I will be going back at the end of May.

If, at the time you take your leave, you've worked for your employer for at least 1 year and 1250 hours (over the past year), you're entitled to take 12 weeks unpaid leave under FMLA. Your employer is required to continue your health coverage. You'll probably have to continue to pay your share of the premiums.
The FMLA has special rules for teachers regarding leaves of absence. For example, if you're eligible to return to work within 3 weeks before the end of the term, your employer can require you to stay on leave until the end of the academic term. This additional leave is not counted as FMLA leave. Your employer must continue health insurance coverage during that time.
