Sorry ladies...another Metformin ?

I've been taking the metformin 3x day w/meals since last wednesday and have feeling beyond awful. Chat Icon I'm in a constant state of nausea and Sunday was the worst, I could not move at all, all day and could not bring myself to take the dosage prescribed to me. I was hoping the side effects would wear off by now instead of getting worse. I'm going to call my doctor in a little while, but was just wondering if anyone else had a hard time with it?

Re: Sorry ladies...another Metformin ?

did you start by taking the 3 a day or was it gradual?

I was warned about that from my dr and that's why he had me build up to the 3 a day the 3rd week.

Also, I find that if I eat any high fat foods with the Metformin I feel likeChat Icon .

I have heard that some people cannot take more then 2 a day, it really bothers them.

I would call the dr and see what they suggest. HOpe you feel better soon.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Sorry ladies...another Metformin ?

Believe me I know your pain. Chat Icon Chat Icon Did you take the full dosage right away or did you start off slowly? I am currently only taking 1000mgs, slowly and I mean slowly going to make my way up to 1500mgs (maybe in 2 weeks or so)
Just like you the metformin made me so sick and I completely stopped taking it all together...but I know I need it and started back with 500mgs for a couple of weeks then 1000mgs.

I find taking all the pills right before I go to bed much better on my stomach. Occasionally I get waves of nausea or my stomach gets upset but I can tell you the side effects do wear off some as you keep taking it. Maybe you can try taking it all at once before you go to bed rather than taking them with the meals. I'm sorry the met is making you sick but it will get better.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Sorry ladies...another Metformin ?

I didn't have a problem with it, but I was VERY careful with my diet when I took it.

LOTS of protein, almost NO CARBS.

I found when I did take it with something heavy on the carbs I had trouble with it.

Have you tried that?

Re: Sorry ladies...another Metformin ?

Thanks!!! I'm glad to know I'm not alone!

In the past week, I've cut out sugar from my diet and have switched from drinking my morning coffee to having tea instead (I know it's still caffine, but I need something! Chat Icon ) I did notice on Saturday, after a heavy but healthier lunch, that I felt like crap, and I have noticed that I feel lousier when I eat certain foods, than I do when I don't. I also think on Sunday I felt the way I did because I didn't eat enough. I was just so sick the thought of food just made it worse. But I did feel ALOT better after DH made me eat dinner.

My dr. just told me to start taking it. Didn't have me start slow and gradually increase. I'm waiting for a call back from the office now. I may just switch to taking it all right before I go to bed.

Thanks again!

Re: Sorry ladies...another Metformin ?

I have been taking it, didn't change my diet at all, but taking it 2x/day. I take 2000mg/day. It wreaked havoc on my stomach in the beginning but now only every so often I have stomach problems.

Re: Sorry ladies...another Metformin ?

I have been taking it for over a year now and the doctor said that I will be on it until I have a baby. I am currently taking 2000mg a day, in the beginning I had some minor stomache cramps.

If you watch your diet the cramps wont be too bad.
