Re: we decided on newport, RI
Definitely go to the white horse tavern for dinner. It is a very old barn that is all lit by candles. Dinner was great there.
DH and I did the breakers, marble house and another mansion. All I remember was the ticket was $25 for all three.
There is also a great ice skating rink there if you are into that.
We went onto trip advisor to research what people thought about certain restaurants and they were great recommendations so you may want to try that as well.

We just went in January. The mansions are gorgeous. My favorite was the Breakers. There are tons of great restaurants and taverns for lunch or dinner. We went w/friends who knew the area so I'd have to find out the exact names of where we went. FM me if you want more specifics.
Beautiful town!

I went to school in Providence and spent a lot of time in Newport - it's fantastic. What time of year are you going? The Cliff Walk is amazing, definitely a must-see (assuming the weather allows for it). The mansions, of course. The oldest temple in America is there (ironically enough ). Hmm, what else... The Red Parrot is a great place for drinks. Also, they rent scooters and bikes - both great ways to get around the town since it's pretty small and traffic can be a bit of a bear.
ETA: If you and your DH like lobster and filet mignon, there's an all-you-can eat place about 40 min from Newport in Charlestown RI called The Nordic Lodge. I am so not a 'buffet' person (they actually gross me out, normally) but this place is pretty incredible. Go hungry!

Re: we decided on newport, RI
We just went there last weekend for the Winter Festival. It was so much fun! It was freezing out so we didn't do the cliff walk but we drove down Bellevue Avenue to check out the mansions and took a ghost tour of Belcourt Castle. We walked around in town, went to the Newport Vineyard, and did a walking tour at night (which was crazy bc it was sooooo cold). From the maps I saw, it looks like there are some cute beaches to visit when it's warm. When are you planning on going?
