Trimming Dog's Nails

How short is too short?
I know they can bleed if they are too short. Where do I cut to?
Any recommendations on clippers for dogs?

Thanks!!

Re: Trimming Dog's Nails

Does your dog have clear or coloured nails? Every dog is different. You can cut them to just before th quick, however the longer you let your dogs nails grow the longer the quick might be. If the dogs nails are clear thoguh you can see where the quick is. Four Paws makes an inexpensive nail clipper with a guard on it so that you can only cut a small amount at a time. Also you can get a small dremel which actually files the nails rather than cuts them.

I make DH do the dark nails...I am chickenChat Icon

Maybe the first time take her to PetSmart...they can do it pretty cheaply & most of their groomers will let you see how to do it....

Re: Trimming Dog's Nails

We use the Dremmel on Bama's nails. It's much easier and I don't have to be afraid of the quick.
I learned about the Dremmel from a Doberman breeder's website. Dobie's have black nails, so she uses the Dremmel since you can't see the quick.
If you Dremmel them a little bit once a week, that will help push the quick back.

I got our's from Target, but I'm pretty sure there is a pet one that you can find online.

Actually, here you go: Dremel
