Special ed certification question - can anyone help me?
I received my sepcial ed cert when they changed it from k-12 to K-6, which really upset me...
what do I need to do to get a certificate for 6-12?
I find going on those NYS education websites so confusing and I never get the answers I'm looking for - who can I speak with to actually get information that will HELP me?
TIA!

Re: Special ed certification question - can anyone help me?
The new Special Ed certifications are K-6 and 7-12. And I believe there is a separate pre-K certification.
Trying to talk to people at the state level is quite difficult. I would recommend calling the local Boces certification office (depending on where you teach). They are usually quite helpful.
Here is the contact office for the certification office at the Western Suffolk Boces Program # 602 Joseph Myers 631/549-4900, ext. 257
I belive that the new certification is called Students with Disabilities and is broken down into early childhood, 1-6, 5-9 or 7-12. The 7-12 certification has a specific subject linked with it (ie, English, math, etc...). You may need to take some additional courses in that particular subject area.
I hope that helps. My certification is under the old requirements so I am not 100% sure about the new regulations but I tried to share what I know.
Good luck!

Re: Special ed certification question - can anyone help me?
Thank you - this is helpful - I was so annoyed when my cert. changed in the middle of my masters degree, but luckily it didnt affect the type of job I wanted, but now I'm thinking of moving fwd and doing other things, and I'm not going to be able to with K-6 - I will call BOCES!
