my dog and cat -- what to do?

When DH and I moved into our house, we brought in the teacup maltese I'd grown up with who was living with my dad. We already had a cat. At first, the dog (Nikki) would try to play with the cat (Owen) but Owen would swat at her so she'd run away. Then they went thru a period where they just ignored each other. Now suddenly it's something new -- Nikki barks and barks at Owen and he just sits there. It's really bad at night, when DH & I are trying to sleep. I had to put Owen in another room where Nikki couldn't see him so we could get some .

Any ideas on what I can do to stop this behavior?

Overall you should be able to teach your dog quiet or no barking whatever command you prefer. you can spray him with water and then treat him immediately when he stops so he knows. You can also try the can with coins in it. I read the worst thing to do is yell because they think you are "barking" too.
