Reverse Sneezing
Has anyone experienced this condition with their dog? Any feedback?
We thought my dog was having seizures. Our vet has been no help and after doing lots of research online and I found this reverse sneezing and found that he has all the symptons. Just curious if anyone else experienced this?

Re: Reverse Sneezing
yes, my dog did it for awhile and it just disappeared- the vet did say that with shih tzus and dogs with that kind of pushed in nose it is more common- and there is a surgery that can be done to help it, however he did not recommend it. Did it happen out of nowhere? Boogie just started doing it and it is so scary- but then it just stopped! thank goodness.
I would talk to your vet!

Re: Reverse Sneezing
We have a shih tzu mix and she did this as a puppy, as she got bigger and her nose opened up more, it stopped.

Re: Reverse Sneezing
Thanks girls. I have a shih zu so I feel alot better now reading that it happened to both of your dogs. He will be two in Aug. so he is still little. Hopefully it will go away as he gets older. It has just started happening alot more, but I heard it could be from all the pollen.

Re: Reverse Sneezing
My French Bulldog does this a lot. He has allergies and it's almost like he is having an asthma attack. Another friend's French Bulldog does this too.

Thanks girls. I have a **** zu
LOL that it shih tzu got ****'d!
My pup does it too. Our vet suggested gently massaging its throat helps relieve the reverse sneezing in the moment.

My dog has that too. I think he does it on purpose I swear, it only happens when he is begging for food like a little kid who hyperventilates on purpose. I tip his head up and rub his throat and it goes away.

Re: Reverse Sneezing
they can do an operation to open the nose more if it is becoming a problem my vet said. When Abby did it, she was only doing it when upset, really naxious etc....So we waited it out and she outgrew it, but her nose opened up a lot.
All our Shih tzu books mentioned its common....

Hmm I wonder if this is what happened to Gizmo... I didn't post it here but last month he got really sick with vomiting and had what I thought was a seizure. The emergency vet and regular vet had no explanation for it and he is fine now

Re: Reverse Sneezing
My dog has had this ( he has a pushed in nose too) my vet taught me there is a quick fix you can do while they are in mid reverse sneeze- if you pinch the nose closed so that they are forced to breathe out of the mouth ( it will take a second, I know it sounds mean but they are not getting air through the nose then anyway) that should stop it right away..... If your dog is pudgy- losing weight will help a lot too HTH

Re: Reverse Sneezing
Cooper is a notorious "reverse sneezer". He's done it in front of the vet and they didn't bat an eyelash, they said it was fairly normal especially during allergy season.

I've never heard of a dog vomiting from reverse sneezing. Did he have any other symptons that you thought it was a seizure?

My dogs both had this when we first bought them. They were diagnosed with Kennel Cough (Bordatella).
ETA: Bella also gets this when she runs around outside a lot. She's very allergic and sometimes I give her children's benadryl to ease the cough (dr's orders of course).

Re: Reverse Sneezing
our beagle, cooper, does this a lot. he usually does it after being outside or going on walks. i think he sucks up all the pollen and causes an allergic reaction. it's a scary thing but it goes away and he's fine afterwards

Re: Reverse Sneezing
Austin has done this before...I never really knew what it was, but figured it was just normal due to his pushed in face.
We had his soft palate cut(shortened) when he was a puppy, and it still happend from time to time.
Perfectly normal. I found this when I googled it.
Some info on reverse sneezing

Re: Reverse Sneezing
Thanks so much girls. It's more common than I thought, which makes me feel alot better. My vet told me to give him a tsp. of childrens benadryl when I see him scratching and sneezing so I guess we'll just continue to do that.
