Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

Maybe you can ask your doctor for something to relax you.

There are also courses that you can take to get over the fear of flying

You should look into it. It would be sad for you to miss your sisters wedding because if it! Chat Icon

Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

I'm pretty bad. I will do it- but only if I have to- and I don't relax the entire flight. When I see people sleeping on flights I can't imagine ever being able to do that.

What helped me last time I flew was I flew on Jet Blue- and let me tell you- those TV's were the best thing ever.
Distracted me so much that I didn't even really freak out- and next thing I knew we were there.

I have heard people who get prescriptions from the Dr before flying to help calm them down though.

Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

I have anxiety issues with flying. My dr. gave me a prescription for zanax.

I have to fly tonight . . . I couldn't sleep last night just thinking about! Zanax has been helpful. I still have the anxious thoughts, but I don't feel the physical effects of my mental axiety.

Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

valium- the stuff works wonders- don't get the generic- get the real stuff- you will be relaxed and sleepy for the flight

my DH takes them on flights to relax his neck- the cabin pressure can be a killer for him

Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

I used to be really bad...I read a book called "Ask the Pilot" by Patrick Smith at the airport before my honeymoon and it helped SOOOOO much....His explanations about the whole flying process really put my mind at ease... That and a drink at the airport before I get on the plane and I am soooo much better than I used to be.

Take something to relax you. Just try to get there a few days in advance so it has time to wear off.

Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

Get some medication and you'll do fine. When I flew to Tahiti, my Doctor gave me Ambien to help me sleep and it worked great! Like the others said, DON'T MISS YOUR SISTER'S WEDDING....YOU CAN DO IT.

What did you do/take to fly for your HM? I'd get a prescription from the dr!

Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

We just came from Aruba last week..

going there it was 4 hours, coming back it was 4.28min...yes I counted the minutes as I hate to travel and count every minute of the flight......it was so bad the captain & flight attended had to talk to me...the Captain even showed me the **** pit and all the electronics...lol...he said these planes are build to last...

We flew Jet Blue...be aware..when flying over DR/Haiti you will have turbulence for about 23 minutes..(yes I counted the minutes again)...lol...it is bad the air pressure make the plane to bounce around....

If I can do it, you can..

Have fun....

Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

Forgot to add that I hate to fly ever since we had emergancy landing on the plane's belly (the plane lost its wheels)..had to slide down emergency exit..and the plane's tail came off (part of it).

I was 14 years and flying all alone from JFK to Berlin on PanAm (we all know what happened to them)...

hate hate to fly

definitely talk to your doctor. it's a common fear and I'm sure there is something he/she can give you.

Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

If I can do it, you can do it!!!

I'm so afraid that for a couple days before flying I get so anxious and can't really eat a lot or sleep. Then the anticipation of waiting in the airport really gets to me and i'm in the bathroom until we board the plane. I don't like taking any meds so I just deal with the nerves until we're back on the ground again.

I LOVE traveling so I would never let my fear stop me from seeing the world. What helps me during take-off is looking around at the other people on the plane, it really amazes me how calm everyone is. All the bumps, dipping, etc doesn't seem to bother anyone but me!!! People are just reading their paper, sleeping (which makes me so jealous) or chatting with their fam/friends. I love seeing that. Also, talking to the pilot when we get on helps too.

I hope you decide to go!!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Those that are truly afraid to fly...

I panic when I fly. I have to take a ton of things to distract me, and take something (like Xanex) to calm my nerves, otherwise I would not be able to get on a plane. I also absolutely cannot relax and am a ball of tension from beginning to end.
