What is progesterone do exactly?

I had mine checked on Friday and the levels must have been okay because I don't have to take supplements. The nurse said a high level indicated you're going to get your period or you might be pregnant. Well, I'm on 10dpo and tested this morning and got a BFN!

It apparently prepares the uterus lining to receive a fertilized egg. Hope this helps.

Actually at 7 dpo, your progesterone reaches it's height if you 'aren't pregnant', and when it decreases, AF arrives. That's why if you chart, and your temps start to go down, down down toward the end of your LP, that could indicate AF coming. A progesterone level at 7 dpo, is not an indication of pregnancy either, because most of the time, implantation hasn't even begun, and hcg is not secreted into the blood, to allow the corpus luteum to secrete more progesterone.

Progesterone is the essential hormone, used for sustaining pregnancy, it fluctuates. Sometimes when it's too low, that means ovulation hasn't occured, when it's over 5...but under 10, it's not really 'ideal' for implantation, so you can be asked to take progesterone supplements.

When an egg is fertilized, it implants, in the lining, and hcg is supplied. The hcg tells the corpus luteum to keep the progesterone supply going. Usually at that point your progesterone will increase a bit.

After ovulation, the follicule ruptures, what's left of the follicule remains in the ovaries. That part is called the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum supplies the progesterone for the 2ww, and that's how come your temps are elevated during that time. Progesterone heats up the uterine lining, making it a warm environment for "gestation".

If fertilization/implantation doesn't occur, the corpus luteum, stops it's progesterone supply, and the lining sheds....ending up with AF.

If in fact the body produces hcg the pregnancy hormone, the corpus luteum will remain secreting progesterone for practically the first trimester, until the placenta takes over.

Always, get your progesterone results. We each have our own individual numbers of what's high or low for us.

I actually have a consult w/my GYN next week to talk about this very issue. My charts show I don't make it past 9dpo before my temp drops.

I had to take it for a few weeks after I became pregnant to reduce the chance of miscarrying...it was the gel/cream
