wow- your post and what happens to you and what you go through are EXACTLY what i go through...

the anticipation is HORRIBLE... to the point where it ruins the "excitement" of going on vacation!

and it's true-- i look at other people who are so calm and i'm like HOW DO YOU DO THAT?! also when the plane dips or anything happens i look around for someone to freak out along with me and no one ever does Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yup I don't understand how nobody is even the teeniest bit bothered by being on the plane... especially during take off (which is the worst part for me). I feel like it's a common fear but I never see anyone as nervous as me.

Flying with DH helps a lot b/c he actually LOVES flying... which I can't understand! Chat Icon

My Dh loves flying also and this helps me because when I see that he's calm I feel a little better. Take of is the worst part, and when I look around and see people sleeping or reading I wish that I could be that way. Nothing calms me down and medication does not work for me. I just basically suck it up. We are going away in 3 days and the stomach pains are already kicking in Chat Icon

Re: Anyone else terrified of flying?

I have never liked flying but my fear has gotten worse the older I get. I highly recommend going to the doctor and getting some kind of medication ( mine gave me Xanex). It totally helps!

Re: Anyone else terrified of flying?

I AM! I AM!!! Chat Icon

When i was little, i used to fly to florida 3 times a year to see my dad. But as i got older and older i became more afraid to fly. And it's bad.
I can't eat at all before hand, i have nightmares months in advance, my stomach is so upset that drinking... well... i don't think the person next to me would like to see me whip out the barf bag!

One time i was flying home from mexico and the flight was rather bad. Even my brother said so. My knees were shaking and i was almost in tears. This old lady next to me grabbed my leg and was like "god will take care of you." Okay i am so NOT the religious person and this was not the right time to say it to me either. I was like "yeah whatever." Chat Icon Well the flight was so bad that for the next flight i just wanted to take a bus home. I was so ready to but my brother convinced me to get on the plane. Well we're sitting there and backing out of the terminal when luggage falls from the compartment above me and falls on my head. I thought it was a sign! Chat Icon I almost flew off that plane in hysterics. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't know why, but i won't take drugs. I just won't. But i also don't let the fear of flying stop me from doing so. If it did... i'd take the drugs! Chat Icon

My husband tries to keep me occupied with playing gin rummy or i usually read a book. Reading a book is the only thing that keeps me somewhat calm when we hit turbulence. Reading magazines only gives me headaches.

Yes, I am absolutely terrified of flying. I used to love flying when I was little. Then I gradually started to hate it. I just keep thinking the plane is going to go down and there is no way out. It got to be the worst after 9/11. I honestly don't think I can handle it at all. I get so panicky in the cabin, and I refuse to take any medications. I have a fear of that too! Chat Icon

so, yes, right now it is stopping me from traveling and going places that I want to go.

Sorry, I'm not much help at all. But I definitely know how you feel. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone else terrified of flying?

I've heard Laguardia has fear of flying classes and for each different class they have a different guest speaker. For example a pilot explaining what each noise is, turbulance is a pothole, etc.

Re: Anyone else terrified of flying?

I dont but I should because we had a near accident in the air coming back from cancun a few years ago

If I started feeling a phobia to flying I would probably seek professional help to get to the root of the problem like hypnosis or therapy

I know a male psychologist who specializes in treating phobias (like flying). If anyone wants his info, fm me and I will give it to you.

Re: Anyone else terrified of flying?

I am not the biggest fan but i do a lot of the things the ladies on here talk about.....

Look at the pilot and co-pilot when i get on the plane and everyone around me...

Always pay attention to where i am on the plane and the people around me.

I always remember the joy i get from traveling to places so i plan on flying...but I do not enjoy it one bit. I either take Jet Blue and watch the TV or find something to bring to do on the plane to keep me occupied.

We are flying with our kids next week...that should take all the worry out of me in flying while i focus on the kids the whole time!!

I just remind myself all the time that it's more dangerous to get in my car every day then it is to fly and that at any minute during the day there are over 60,000 people in the air and you RARELY hear about a plane crash.
