Back From Germany - Pics & semi-Review

DH had to go to Germany for business so I tagged along and we had a mini-vacation. The office is in Karlsruhe - south-west Germany - and we stayed at the Renaissance Karlsruhe. Lovely hotel, great location, the restaurant was fantastic.

I had the first 3 days to myself...so I explored the small city (only about 140,000 residents). The main attraction is the Schloss (Castle)...behind the castle is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens I've seen. I also visited the Zoo and the gardens as well as the Staatliche Kunsthalle Museum where I saw the Rodin exhibit.

On DHs first free day we spent it in Heidelberg. Beautiful city - virtually untouched by war...very Old European. Great square with little cafes...the main attraction is the Schloss. The view from the Castle is breathtaking...we had rain that day so there was this fog steaming from the trees surrounding the castle - only added to the mystery.

Our last day we spent it in Stuttgart at the Mercedes Benz museum. MB is my favorite car - the Pagoda, most specifically - so this was a treat for the both of us. Other than the museum, the city is very industrial with the old city in the distance. Not sure what else there is to do there.

We spent our last night in Frankfurt (we were flying out early in the morning). Didn't venture out past the hotel.

Thanks...my favorite was Heidelberg...and going to Lauterbourg, France for dinner one night was a treat! The food was a gastronomical experience - 4 hours of food, drink and great company. Chat Icon

The worst part is my smokers cough.......and I'm NOT a smoker Chat Icon It seems like everyone smokes there - everywhere and at all hours of the day.

looks awesome!! so glad you had a great time!
i LOVE heidelberg! we just went to germany in february, and hiedelberg was awesome- we had lunch at a great brewhouse there... we stayed in idor-oberstein, which i think it in the same area as karlsruhe...
and i know what you mean about the smoking! i could't get over how much people smoked over there! we went to berlin for a night and took the train, and we got stuck on the "smoking" car for 4 hours- talk about coughing! but, still loved it!
glad you guys had fun, too! off to look at your other pics!Chat Icon

Wow, that must have been painful! Yeah, I'm saying the same - espcially now that the cough has subsided - that it was all worth it Chat Icon

This may be a dumb question, but how did you communicate with the locals there?

well... i'm not colleen...Chat Icon but i know when we went there, we found that pretty much everyone spoke enough english for us to be able to communicate- even most of the restaurants had menus in english and german.
plus, we went over there to visit our friend who was stationed there in the army, so since he was there for 3 years, he knew enough to be able to help us, too.

I agree - it was pretty easy...especially in the more populated areas. Dinner in France was tough - the waitress only spoke French & German and the menu was in German...thankfully our dinner companions spoke all 3 languages!

Another tough time was the night we went out for Greek...the waitress only spoke German and the menu again, was in German...so I wound up ordering potatoes with a side of french fries Chat Icon Chat Icon It was an interesting dinner...
