Black Tie wedding?
Has anyone been to a real Black tie wedding? Were all the men really in a tux? What did the women wear, gowns?

black tie could mean dark suit and elegant cocktail dress. Something more formal though. It doesn't have to be a gown.

I guess it depends on the crowd - when it says Black Tie - you will find most in tuxes, although you may find a few in dark suits and ties.
I've also been to Black Tie affairs, in Florida, go figure, where every single man wore a tux.

I know my parents are going to a black tie wedding in Florida this weekend . My dad is wearing a tux and my mom well I am not sure I know not a gown though

We had a black tie wedding. It was split between long dresses/gowns, tea length dresses and cocktail dresses. Everyone looked fine.
ETA:
95% of our guests wore tuxes. Those who didnt wore dark suits.

My wedding was black tie-- as well as most of the weddings I have gone to. I have also been to some black tie weddings in FL.
Yes-- most men will wear tuxes, atlhough a dark suit/dark tie would be ok if you don't have a tux. For women, I really think anything goes in terms of length-- as long as the dress is fancy enough. Should it be a super-short cocktail dress-- no. But as long as it hits you at the knee, it should be ok-- IF the dress is fancy enough.
Also in FL, black tie there, is not as fancy as black tie here... I guess due to the more casual atmosphere in warm weather climates. So, if you think something is borderline for here, it will probably be ok in FL. Although, if there are a lot of NY people going to the wedding, then use the same judgement you would use if the wedding was here.

My wedding was also black tie. Most of the men wore tuxes (90%) and the remaining wore dark suits. Women were mixed between gown and cocktail dresses.

I think it really depends on the event and those attending -
For those whom Black Tie affairs are the norm, you would be out of place in anything but a gown and tux - Because those men own tuxes for the multitude of affiars they attend and the women have an appropriate wardrobe as well -
For those who do not normally attend Black Tie events but are having a Black Tie wedding, I think you're fine with a gown, APPROPRIATE cocktail dress or dark suit -

Usually all men are in a Tux especially if it is Sat nite! Most women wear gowns or a very dressy coctail dress.

My wedding was "black tie optional". Most men wore tuxes and most women wore gowns/dressy dresses of some sort.
