FMLA..how does it work for DH?
I work off the books....so it doesn't apply to me, but DH is under the assumption that he needs to use up his vacation/sick time FIRST, then he can take the FMLA.
Only issue is he has 2 weddings to be in in April before his time off gets renewed to 2 weeks worth.
I would REALLY like for him to be home for a little bit to help and bond.....but I understand if he can't

Re: FMLA..how does it work for DH?
from what I understand FMLA just secures a comparable position within the company for a certain amount of time.
For me and my company in CT, when I go on maternity leave i will have 6 week short term disability, and will have to use some PTO or vac to supplement until short term disability kicks in, then if i want more $$ while still covered under FMLA, i can supplement the end of short term dis with more pto/vac time after i deplete my time, the remaining weeks are unpaid.
I am not sure though if the FMLA starts when the short term dis ends, or they both start at the same time.
But for paternity leave, he should be able to supplement vac, personal time if you guys need $$ while he is covered under FMLA

I believe it can be different for each company as far as using you vacation/sick time.
I think the one rule though is that FMLA does not have to be paid they just have to allow you the time off and give you your job back. I'm not an expert on this though. I'm still trying to figure out if my time off before the baby because of my BP counts toward my FMLA or not.

Re: FMLA..how does it work for DH?
FMLA leave guarentees your job for up to 12 weeks time. Companys of over 50 people must have FMLA leave.
You are required to use up you sick and vaction time during these 12 weeks. You are paid for that time.
However anything after that is not paid - your company must maintain your job, If you are the one who is sick you can apply for short term disability (this would not include your DH).
Also, i am not sure that paternity leave is included in FMLA leave, but i could be wrong about this. I thought it was for sickness (self) or family member sickness. Someone else will have to clarify that for you.
Hope that helps.
