I fall under that, but I do not know where to take them. The school I am starting at in Sept. says that there is prof. dev. every other Friday for an hour before or after school. Do you think that counts?

That 175 hours in 5 years is such a scam! You don't have to do ANYTHING extra to get it. Here's the breakdown:

It will be really easy to get the 175 hours. Think about it: There is full-day professional development on Election Day, Brooklyn Day (or whatever they're calling the first Thursday in June now!), and the two days before Labor Day that you have to work. That's 7 hours x 4 days = 28 hours. 28 x 5 years = 140 hours.

PLUS, you have half an hour of professional development at every staff meeting, which are held twice a month (one faculty-wide, and one department-wide). That's an extra hour per month, times 10 months. 10 hours x 5 years = 50 hours.

So, without doing ANYTHING extra, you do 190 hours of professional development over the course of 5 years. If you're a high school teacher and have "off" during Regents Week, you do way more.

Oh, btw, document EVERYTHING! So when you're sitting there during those days before Labor Day we now have to work (grr! Chat Icon ), make sure you write down: "August 30, 2007, 7 hours, Washington High School" etc. and keep it safe. So when you have to submit your paperwork in 2012 you don't have to waste hours going through old school calendars.

Take it from me, I've worked for the NYC DOE for 6 years and they're not exactly the most thorough people when it comes to paperwork. Don't stress over this. Heck, by the time 2012 rolls around, they'll probably get rid of this requirement and come up with something else.

BTW for the new teachers who have not gotten their MA yet you cannot count the hours until after your MA and you get your provisional cert.

I believe it's February 2003!! i graduated with my masters in May of 2003.... we were the LAST class to be able to qualify under the old guidelines.

take a look at your teaching certificate:
if it says PROVISIONAL or PERMANENT you are under the OLD requirements. If it says INITIAL or PROFESSIONAL you are under the NEW requirements.

HTH....

No, it's not. It's FEB '04. TRUST me, I know!!! I just missed being under old cert for English 7-12, but needed two more classes. All my other certs are under the old regs.

It's DEFINITELY FEB '04. Chat Icon
