Re: Long Island Interviewing--Seeking Advice

You just have to keep trying. Yes, sometimes it's who you know, but in my experience, most people I know who have gotten hired on LI have not known the principal, supt, etc. Elem Ed, as you know, is very competitve - so distircts can be as selective as they want.
I do agree with the other posters who said that you may be too expensive for the districts. Also, I had a friend who had looked for an LI elem ed job after teaching in Brooklyn for 8 years. She got a lot of interviews but never got the job. A supt (who didn't hire her) told her that he felt she had been in the city too long and was too set on doing things "the city way" (whatever that means. Whether that's a fair assessment or not, it's possible that is happening in your case too.

Re: Long Island Interviewing--Seeking Advice

I agree that you just have to keep trying. I was teaching Pre-K in Queens for 3 years and after I finished my masters, I sent my resume to every single district on Long Island.

I only got called by ONE district for an interview. I didn't know anyone there (meanwhile, any connection I had with a few other districts never even called me).

I ended up getting the job. It wasn't full time but I was thrilled to have my foot in the door at in a district in Nassau so I took it. I ended up only staying there for one year, because the next year I found a job at an excellent private school in Nassau (which I never thought I wanted private school but now I'll never leave:)

Anyway, my point is that you just have to keep trying and it will eventually work out somehow. You don't necessarily have to know someone, I didnt for any of the posiitons I got. Good luck, I know hoe frustrating it can be!
