If you have small dogs

are they wee wee pad trained indoors or do they go outside?

My dogs are 4 lb. and 6 lb. Yorkies. They are wee wee pad trained indoors but will also go outside. To be honest I am getting sick of the wee wee pads and cleaning them, especially when DS is going to start crawling soon. But I can't imagine putting them out in the pouring rain or the frigid snow being they are so little. My little guy who is 4 lbs. barely has any meat on his bones b/c he has a liver disease. I guess I can alway let them go indoors on days like that, I just dont want to confuse them.

Re: If you have small dogs

I have a Pomeranian who is a littleo ver 3 years old. And up until a month ago she was only wee wee pad trained indoors. I spent a week with her working on going potty outside and I am proud to say she has gotten the hang of it.

We just set the pad up on our deck and put a chair over it to protect from rain (or snow as the winter approaches). It's still a pain to clean up after but at least it's outdoors.

Or, when your DC starts to become mobile maybe you can move the pad into a less traffic area like the bathroom or something. Just a thought.

Re: If you have small dogs

both. Our Shiba Inu & Pug go outside, but our Chinese Crested and Chihuahua are indoor dogs. I would have no problem training them to go outdoors, except we live in a very wooded area, and they are too small (IMO) to get the number of vaccinations needed to protect them (ie the lyme & lepto shots) so I keep them indoors most time. They do go outside, but under supervision and on my deck, not the grass.

I have a chihuahua and she has always been an outside dog. And believe it or not she loves the snow! She loves running around in it.

Re: If you have small dogs

quinn is wee wee pad trained... we live in a co-op so we don't have a yard that we can just let him go free in when he has to go... plus dh and i can be gone for 11 hours at a clip sometimes, so he needed to be trained that way.
but when i walk him, he always goes outside.
when we move into our house, i'd like to train him to go outside only... i'm also getting tired of having the pads around... i just don't even know how to begin to train him to go outside now! he's my first dog.

I have a yorkie and she is trained to go outside. She goes to the back door and pits her paw up for when she needs to go out, and it's been working really well. She's a little over 3 months now.

We never used pads with Katie- our Jack Rusell. She was trained to use the outdoors.

Both. We put pads down if we are going to be gone more than 5-6 hours. Most of the time, they don't use it but since I always leave water out, I feel better leaving the pads out too.

Re: If you have small dogs

She goes on the wee wee pad.

I have never been able to get her to go outside.

We live in an apt. though and it would be a hassle, plus with a new baby, hard to walk her at all during the day.

When we get a house, I would like to train her to go outside if we have a yard.

When we got her she wa sless then 3 lbs and we couldnt take her out, then Winter came etc...now shes about 9 lbs but still goes inside.

They mainly use the pads but if they're outside they sure do love to use the grass.

Re: If you have small dogs

She goes outside (9.5 lb. maltipoo). She loves the snow and the rain does not faze her at all. We originally trained her on the wee-wee pads but now she is strictly outside and we even have her trained to only go in one spot in the yard.

Re: If you have small dogs

We trained our cavapoos to go outside when they were 10 weeks old. We started with the leash at first.

You can still train your dog.

Take a paper towel and wipe the "scent" from a wet/soiled wee wee pad. Go outside with your dog on a leash. Wipe the papertowel in the area of your yard that you want them to go. Wipe the grass of that area. Then say "good boy/girl". When you see your dog "going for business" rush to take the dog outside to that spot you wiped the paper towel. Repeat everytime and keep taking the paper towel outside and wipe and bring the dog with you. Make sure to "treat" your dog if she/he does the business outside.
