Has anyone ever highlighted their own hair?

I highlight my hair (get it done at a salon) and I am do for a touch up but HATE spending so much money each time. Has anyone ever used a store bought product and done highlights themselves? If so, was it permanent or does it wash out?

i did my own once - i think it was a clairol permanent. it came with one of those plastic caps with the pin holes, that you are supposed to pull hair through. that thing was awful to work with so i didn't use it

i ended up pulling random pieces of hair and gathering them at the top of my head. then i applied the solution to only that section, tied them up in a rubberband, and let it sit.

to be honest - i didn't do too badly! i wouldn't do it again though. also, i am naturally blonde, so was just going a bit lighter. it would have been hard to mess up!

I did my one highlights back in college. I took the pieces that I wanted and used pieces of tin foil like they do in the salon. I used a brush to apply and then folded up the hair in the tin foil while waiting for it to set.
