Spnoff on Supplies Posts, PARENTS chipping in ?

I remember one of my Professors saying to always get what you can from your parents. You never know who works where and can get what for you.

She had one parent that was in her school (she owned the school) that gave her tremendous paper supply for several years.(through his own company).
Another parent happened to work somewhere and got her something else.

SHe said never be afraid to ask parents for things. But since hearing that in class, I also remember hearing parents at playgroups and at parties saying "sheesh these teachers want us to supply them with all this stuff, what the heck?"

How do you guys handle getting the parents involved in helping to cut your expenses a little.

(and the wipes and tissues are for THEIR kids anyway Chat Icon )

Teachers in our school really do get everything we need. We are very lucky.

That being said, we send home supply lists and parents are pretty good about sending the items in. (Lists include not only supplies but tissues and sanitizer etc.)

I have no problem sending home a note if we need something in particular. There are always parents willing to help.
(One of my son's teacher's one year had a sign-up list at Meet the Teacher night. It included items the class might need throughout the year.)

I have this cute poem that I put up at Meet the Teacher Night, which basically asks for supplies. I have supplies on post its around the poem, so parents can take off some of the things they want to get. Sometimes parents go crazy at Costco to bring in things for the room. I also put little wish lists every now and then in my newsletter. Parents are usually more than happy to help out, especially when they realize that I have been buying many of the materials for my classroom (I work in a public school on LI), but we don't get a lot towards materials.)

If a parent ever asked why they should chip in for tissues and all, I'd reply with this...

A box of tissues $1.00 (at the cheapest).
We go through a box a week.

That's about $40 is TISSUES.

I'd rather spend that on new books for the class.

We send home a supply letter in the beginning of the year, and then as I need things (tissues, wipes, etc.) I put it in my newsletter asking for donations. Not everyone donates, but enough do to get us by, and then there is always the super generous parent that will by the huge pack of wipes from Costco, or the multipack of tissues. I have found that this works well. This way, the parents that have a problem with it don't need to donate, and those that would like to can.

A supply list for school items (notebooks, pens, etc) is sent home. Things like tissues our district supplies and usually is not an issue.

My school is the same way, sometimes I just tell the kids, to tell their parents we need tissues, etc, and then they send them in.

Yes I will. It's at school, so the next time I go up there, I'll get a copy and post it.

The school provides everything for the parents. We are a title I school so most parents can't afford to buy supplies for their child.
