Co-sleeping parents- UPDATE w/ pics!

At what age did your child start to sleep on their own, and how did you do it?

We've always co-slept, however we've done a "modified" co-sleeping routine. RJ would start off in his crib, and then come into our bed half way through the night. This worked really well, since it still gave DH and I some private time..

Since I went back to work, DS has been in our bed beginning to end. I keep trying to get back into our old routine, but it hasn't been real successful.

Ive let him cio a little, Ive stayed in his room with him, Ive even slept in his crib with him- he refuses to stay in their alone (However he has no problem napping in their during the dayChat Icon )

I'm just curious as of to when he will just go to bed on his own, alone??

Re: Co-sleeping parents

No advice only Chat Icon as we are in the same position - starts off in the crib but is with us by 2.am each night. She doesnt even use the crib for naps.

DD is 18mths and there is no end in sight.

Wish I had some advice but dont...just wanted you to know you are not the only one being kicked out of bed every night!!Chat Icon

Re: Co-sleeping parents

Honestly- Im not complaining, but I cant help but wonder if the sleeping on his own is something Im gonna have to enforce or if its something that will happen on its own?

we co- sleep also and honestly...we love it! It doesnt bother us either and I think if I started her out in her room like you said she would be fine and she might end up back with us but who cares. Seriously,...do you really see a problem with Ry or Gilly...c'mon now...hahaha Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Co-sleeping parents

Well, we co-slept with Nicholas and I can tell you, to this day he still wakes up in the middle of the night and wants to come in my bed most nights. I think he is just afraid to be alone now and me continuing to foster that has made it a struggle now. I was co-sleeping with Emma, but I started putting her in the crib recently because I don't want it to become a hard habit to break down the road like it has been with Nicholas.

Both of my girls left the bed at 2 and haven't come back (unless they're sick or scared)

On their own? Did they go straight to a toddler bed?

Should I be doing something?

Re: Co-sleeping parents

I'm still wondering when Julia will sleep in her own bed......Chat Icon

We have a toddler bed for her next to our bed, and she will sleep in it for a few hours but I have to put her in it asleep and when she wakes up she freaks out and wants to come back into our bed, I guess it will just take a while till she gets use to it, I also can't wait to move and get her into her own room, I feel that will help her more (I hope).

Yes, once we got them a toddler bed they both left willingly.

We had them be a part of it. They "helped" DH put the bed together, then made their own beds. That night they would just walk into their own room and lay in their bed.

Re: Co-sleeping parents

It is not an easy thing to break if you want to. Sammy is 5 years old and still wants to sleep with us. He starts off in his bed but in the middle of the night wants us. I never intended to do co - ssleeping but ever since he was a baby when he woke in the moring if it were early I brought hime to my bed - now he just likes it. I now set up a little blanket on my floor and thats were he goes if he feel he needs us,

Sara at 18 months wants nothing to do with my bed.

Re: Co-sleeping parents

any chance of moving DC once they fall asleep in your bed? Try putting yours or DH's tshirt in the crib with them, so they get your "scent"

We try moving him while he is asleep- he freaks out. He could be out cold but as soon as we lean over the crib to put him down- his eyes open wide!!!

Greeneyes- Did you girls have their own room?

RJ has his own room, but I'm wondering if I should put the toddler bed in my room?

This would probably be the first step to transition RJ since he is having such a difficult time of it. It's worth a try...you have nothing to lose. Chat Icon

Re: Co-sleeping parents

i have nothing to offer here really, i just wanted to say how i envy you girl- i co clept for 4 months until my ped insisted that my DD was waking in the nite bc she smelt my milk and could smell me- the way he put it was like- if your husband woke up every few hours and knew hed get, well, to have relations with you, dont you think hed wake up all the time? so i thought-woah, ill put her in the crib!!! i thought i was the cause of her waking up a couple times a nite (i BF by the way)....so i put her in the crib, and well, i love that she sleeps from 930pm-well, shes still sleeping right now at 10am, but i do miss her, and wish i didnt transition her to the crib so early......

i applaud you all.........and im sulking just a little...Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Co-sleeping parents

I dont know if this is what you want to here. BUt age 4 worked for us. He still sometimes will fall asleep in our bed or come to our bed early in the morning. BUt for the most part he has been in his bed since he turned 4 and we told him all 4 years olds HAVE to sleep in their bed.

Maybe you could try it with 3?

Re: Co-sleeping parents

I had the same questions. We never meant to co-sleep, but it just happened. He stays in his crib until 2 or 3 then he's in with us. DH thinks it's terrible but I love it! However, I do want to start breaking him of the habit. It's too hard to get him to go to sleep on his own.

Re: Co-sleeping parents

Ok- we turned DS crib into a toddler bed last night. I'm usually a firm believer to keep them in a crib until they climb out, but since DS doesn't use his crib, and some of you had success stories with the bed, I decided to give it a try...

Anyways, DH turned it into a bed, DS helped, and we of course really hyped it up. I laid down with him on the couch, until he fell asleep..(this too, will change... baby stepsChat Icon )

I was able to put him in his bed, and when I put him down he popped up his little head, I said "you need to do naunie in your big boy bed" he laid back down, and that was it.

At 5am he walked across the hall with his doggie, and blanket, tapped me on the arm, and I rolled over and put him in my bed.

I was so proud he made it that long! Heres hoping tonight will be as successful!
