No HW/failing in Elective Classes?

I know a lot of you aren't elective teachers but has anyone at the secondary level heard this?

When I met with the other bus teacher friday, she told me I wasn't allowed to give hw or fail anyone.

Re: No HW/failing in Elective Classes?

I taught high school PE and while I could fail someone, I could not give below a 50 without department approval. While I sadly had some who rightfully earned close to a 30 or less, I still gave them a 50.

I know, it's PE....a 50!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: No HW/failing in Elective Classes?

I feel like what is going to make these kids put any effort in or be accountable if they don't have HW and I can't fail them????

I taught forensics last year. I gave homework and I failed people. Perhaps it is just an unwritten rule at your school. I was definitely more lenient in that class than my Regents class though.

Re: No HW/failing in Elective Classes?

I don't plan on being "tough" like I would with a math class, but I mean what's the point of having electives if they aren't going to be treated like a class.

Re: No HW/failing in Elective Classes?

I am elementary, so I dont have any first hand experience with this. It does seem silly though that you cant give HW at all?!
Or fail a student?

I am not sure about that thinking, though. sadly, I have seen parents even at the lower level treating specials (which get grades) as "just extra" and not really graded classes. Chat Icon

Re: No HW/failing in Elective Classes?

umm... i would double check that fact with an administrator... i give hwk all the time and plenty of kids have earned an F in my class... all i teach are electives... some fill graduation requirements, others are pure electives....

I would double check with your director or administrator first.

From what I can think of the reasoning behind that might be that they want the kids to be successful and have less pressure in elective classes. I think that is BS. They need credits for electives just like any other subject. And they should have HW, maybe not every night but like projects over a few nights or even weeks.

I would get the full school from a director. Sorry

I don't teach specials but we have plenty of electives in my dept although most are tied in with a college course.

I agree with the above. It might also be the dept/ or teacher's way of avoiding more work and headachesChat Icon Not right but I know it does happen.
