Sexism at its finest
Pregnant Student, Banned From Graduation, Walks Anyway Father Of Girl's Child Allowed To Participate
POSTED: 3:08 pm EDT May 19, 2005 UPDATED: 3:28 pm EDT May 19, 2005
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alysha Cosby was told she couldn't take part in her graduation at St. Jude Educational Institute in Montgomery, Ala., because she was pregnant.
SURVEY What do you think of the pregnant girl's decision to show up at her graduation ceremony? I think she had every right to be there. She should have stayed away.

But after the last student on the program received a diplomas, Cosby announced her own name and walked across the stage anyway -- to the cheers of many of her classmates at the Roman Catholic high school.
Still, according to the Montgomery Advertiser, some at the ceremony considered her move in poor taste.
The school had delivered her diploma to her house earlier in the day, but she still wanted to take part in the ceremony.
Her mother was unapologetic, saying: "She deserved to walk, and she did."
The father of the girl's child -- also a senior at the school -- was allowed to participate in the graduation.

Re: Sexism at its finest
That's so stupid, she should had been allowed to walk just like everyone else. That's really discriminatory.

Re: Sexism at its finest
There was a poll on the website asking if you thought she had the right. Something like 95% of respondents agreed with what she did.

Either they BOTH don't get to walk or they both do!
Leave it to a Catholic School.
ETA: At my school, if a girl got PG she was expelled, but the father was not.

Re: Sexism at its finest
In the south its a lot differend then here. There are a lot more Teen pregnancy then there are here.
I personally think that its so WRONG to not be allowed to walk! She worked hard to get there so why shouldn't she walk?
I didn't graduate on time (I had to goto summer school graduated in August) I wasn't allowed to walk I still went to graduation and supported my friends and when it would have been my turn I screamed out my name and everyone started clapping

Re: Sexism at its finest
If she passed her exams and was graduating, she should be able to do it at the school with the other student who are graduating. What she does in private life should not have any effect on this. Just because someone has done something you don't agree with, you cannot take away their achievments. Maybe she shouldn't be voted "Most likely to become a nun.." but that's different....

This guy sounds like a real gem for walking when the mother of his child was told she could not.

I agree, if the father was allowed to walk then she should have been. He is just as responsible for her being pregnant as she is.

Re: Sexism at its finest
If she was allowed to remain in school to finish her coursework, why not let her walk? Pregnant or not, she earned the degree and should be allowed to receive it like everyone else. I don't think it matters that it is a Catholic school.
ETA: She's got a lot of cajones.

Re: Sexism at its finest
I agree! Why single her out just because she's visibly pregnant, and the guy is fine??!?! W T F - ever. I would have sued the school for discrimination if I was her.
