giving up your seat on a plane
Do they still ask for volunteers? I want to give mine up in Feb. do i get to the airport early and hope for the best??

They do still ask, but obvioulsy the flight has to be overbooked. Are you travelling during mid-winter session? Unless it's a holiday, they tend to not be overbooked.

It happens but it has to be overbooked. The airline industry isn't doing so great right now so Im not sure how often it happens

I wouldn't get there early - they don't realize they are in an oversold situation until close to the time they start to board.
I've heard it a couple of times recently - but, not as often as I used to. The rewards they were offering recently for being bumped though weren't worth it IMO.

We are going to the carribean over the major school break week (presidents week). We are returning on the only flight the airline offers during the day. We are also returning on that Sunday night. I know the flight is completly booked I just don't know if they overbooked.

You probably won't know until close to boarding time. The gate agent usually makes an announcement asking if there are any volunteers willing to give up their seat. They'll usually say how many they need. Be fast tovolunteer b/c there are usually more volunteers that overbooked seats.
In return, you'll get on the next available flight and a voucher around $400/per person (but it can vary by airline). Depending on how many flights there are to your destination, you could be on a flight right away or not for a while.

Thanks, it's Cayman Airways and they only offer 1 flight to NY a day I don't know what they will offer, In the past we have gotten vouchers, lodging, meals and to stay an extra day. I am fine staying in the tropical warmth for a whole extra day!!

I used to work for an airline and if we were overbooked (airlines are allowed to overbook by 20%) we started asking for volunteers at check-in, but told them it was not definite. When lists were pulled up at boarding, it wasn't done by check-in time, but by number of people travelling. If you have a family - they are not as willing to deboard you, since it will be hard to sit you all together on another flight. They are usually looking for singles and couples.
For those that were deboarded, we paid for an airport hotel room and transportation to and from + $400 voucher for our airline (but you could use it on our partners as well.)

so you should just change your flight for the next day....you are going to spend time in the airport "hoping" to get bumped from the flight....and waste the extra day there....sounds like a waste of time to me....

If it were only that simple... yes, it is a waste of time in an airport hoping to get bumped and if we don't get it that's fine. We have already extended our vacation from Sat to Sun return. I dont want to pay for the extra time. If I can help the airline out while they let me stay in Grand Cayman on their dime why not??

they still ask and you have no way of knowinf if the flight is over booked or not. when they do ask, usually there is a long line of volunteers as well and you have to be picked on first come first serve basis. when you check in you still won't know untiil you get to the gate and it's time to board.

If I remember from your other posts, aren't you traveling with other family members? You would need the flight to be really overbooked to accomodate everyone.

Yes there are 11 of us, my ILs leave Saturday, my mom and brother don't HAVE to give up their seats, they can go home, although I know they would give up their seats as well.

airlines will put you on other airlines. the only time they won't is when there are no more possible flights out (late at night.) So if American Airlines (or whichever other airline) has seats, they will put you on there. But again - they most likely will not do this with a large group- especially if you have kids.

There are only 4 seats Im looking for, even 2 seats together on different sides of the plane are fine. I remember doing this when I was younger and still sitting w my parents
