Question about taking a car seat on the plane

We are flying to Missouri in May to visit my father. We did not purchase a seat for our DD on the plane but we need to bring the car seat. I do not want to check it with our luggage in case it gets lost. Will they let me check it at the gate like a stroller even though I did not purchase a ticket for her?. Thanks, I know I could call the airline but I figured I would check here first. I am flying Delta if that matters.

We just flew Delta and were allowed to check the stroller and car seat at the gate.

ETA: We did not purchase a seat for her either. On the way back we lucked out, it was a pretty empty flight so we were able to use the car seat on the plane.

We just flew with my 3 year old and my 20 month old. We brought the carseat on the plane for my 3 year old and tried to "gate check" my 20 month olds seat. They gave us such a hard time about it and ended up putting it with the luggage, but they did not bring it back up with my stroller, we had to go wait at baggage claim for it.

I think it all depends on the flight crew.

we were told we could check it with our stroller at the gate, but we lucked out and were able to bring it on with us
