getting Prego... and NYC

i have a question for NYC teachers...

We have 2 teachers in my building who got preggo just before their tenure and then got tenure in sept and will deliver this month. I thought this was a big NO NO, my thoughts were that they may not give you tenure because you might take time off.

I was talking to a former AP of mine from NYC and she said that its not like that in the city. I could get pregnant before tenure and still take my time off like 2 years off and then they have to take me back even without tenure. is this true? but i guess i still run the risk of coming back and then they dont offer me tenure.

I prob plan on getting preggo (or hope to) before my tenure year, get tenure and then go out like the teachers in my building did, but i was just curious about how it works

They can't deny you tenure because you get pregnant. They can delay it to make up the months that you are out on maternity leave if you give birth before you are tenured.

From what you are saying you plan to give birth after you receive tenure so it doesn't matter anyway.

I received tenure in Sept and am due in January. You can take up to 5 years off per child unpaid and they will hold your position; not necessarily in the school that you currently work in but within the city.

Unfortunately I cannot afford that so I will take maternity, then grace, and then FMLA. I plan to go back in May. Hope this helped!

it is ILLEGAL to let someone go just because they are pregnant! I know the city is crazy, but i don't think they can do this....

I am on LI now, and I know that in my district, if you are tenure track and get pregnant and take time off before you're tenured, your tenure date is just pushed back. A girl in my building was supposed to be tenured in June of this year. She got pregnant and took three months off before June. She will now be tenured at the end of December.
