The thing is that this has been going on for YEARS and the MLB KNEW about it, they just did nothing b/c the players were performing better and in turn the popularity grew and the $$$ these execs. were making off it grew which led them to ignore the situation.
I know drugs are bad and that kids follow their idols. But what about the sports player that commit crimes and than are allowed back in the game after they served their time? Michael Vick is going to serve 23 months and I am sure he will be back out on the field and he was charged with a federal crime.
I dont know so much that the gov't should be involved, but I think in all sports, standards should be set by the organizations. We are telling our kids drugs are bad, but yet we are still going to play our baseball player and football players and whoever else does steroids or performance enhancing drugs MILLIONS b/c they make other people money. What kind of lesson is that teaching our children?
ETA: In order to show our children that steroid and drugs use is NOT acceptable, players found using them should receive strict fines and penalties, whether it be financially or being suspended without pay, etc. But that will NEVER happen b/c again, they make other people too much money.
If you want to make lessons and teach children one thing I want to poiint out is that why shouldn't Vick be allowed back in to play? He was a criminal, he admitted, went to court, and will have his jail time served..
ITA and you'll have a few dog lovers playing defense to sack his ***

they don't give a cr@p about celebrities or athletes doping themselves up.....
they DO want to deflect attention from tons of stuff the gov't isn't doing, though. Iraq, afghanistan, mortgage / credit meltdown, economy, dozens of gov't cover-ups (ex. waterboarding tapes), global warming, childrens health bill (vetoed a SECOND TIME)
our gov't is completely impotent and broken. The only symbolic gesture they could make that they can still do SOMETHING is to look into MLB

Can I just say that the entire "Mitchell Report" is based on hearsay. There is no evidence, just the word of some people who are awaiting jail sentences.
Maybe its true maybe its not, but I think it is so unfair to put these names out there like this with no proof.

yes thank you! thats one problem i have with this! the other problem i have is that they spent an estimated $60M to investigate this...and mind you alot of the players in question are already retired!!!!
there's a war going on, the housing market is in a slump and (some will debate this but) we're in a recession!!!! it just ruffles my feathers that the priorities seem out of whack.
eta: im not saying that i dont think steroid abuse is a problem that should be addressed. it definitely should be. but not to this extent. its just excessive IMO.

The Mitchell report does have some proof. They have cancelled checks for a guy that was a known steroid dealer. What they don't have proof on is for people like Clemens and Pettitte and Justice that all are accused based on one person who was being faced with jail time giving up some names. That bothers me a lot.
As far as why did Congress step in? Yes they have a lot more going on that may seem to be more important but MLB was not doing anything about the steroid problem. And Congress is suppose to protect our country. They felt that they needed to make baseball address the issue so that more people don't die from it and so that kids might start realizing why it's not good to take steroids. It needed to be addressed.
