San Diego help!
We're going to San Diego in June and I'm currently looking for a hotel. Anyone know the best area to stay in? I'd rather not rent a car so I'm looking for somewhere with good access to transportation, restaurants and bars in the area and is safe.

Have you thought about renting a condo? I stayed in Pacific Beach in July and we shared a condo with another couple. It was gorgeous and so much better than a hotel for us. We could walk to the beach from our place.
What kind of area are you looking for? Pacific Beach/Mission Beach is a young party crowd.
San Diego is pretty big. You'll probably going to have to rent a car.
FM me if you want more help! I think hayleyandsteve live in San Diego as well.

Re: San Diego help!
You can try coronado island, the marriot there has a ferry to the gaslamp district, which is where most of the resteraunts, bars etc. are located.
The public transport in san diego isnt bad. I went last year for 5 days and didnt rent a car, but you have to be willing to ride a public bus. You can get to all the major attractions that way (zoo, seaworld).
We stayed at the Wyndham Emerald plaza which was in the downtown area because my husband went for a conference and it was there. I walked to the gaslamp district, its a fairly safe area.

Hey, I didn't know you were going to SanDiego. When we went there we stayed at the Coronado Hotel which was beautiful and it wasn't that far of a drive to the main city where all the bars and restaurants were.

Yes, we live in San Diego
I really feel like you need a car here.. but that's just me! Fox has the cheapest rentals that I've seen (in case you're interested).
How much are you looking to spend?
The W hotel is GORGEOUS and has a good restaurant inside. Also, the lobby turns into a bar/lounge at night. The W is in downtown San Diego and is pretty close to the Gaslamp district which has lots of great restaurants and trendy NY-esque nightlife.
Pacific Beach is more of a younger crowd, but there are yummy restaurants and more laid back bars there.
I've never been to Coronado so I don't know too much about that.
La Jolla has a few hotels that are nice... there is good shopping over there also and it's right near the beaches and a ton of good restaurants.
Let me know if you need suggestions for restaurants or whatever! We've only been living here a few months but I'll help you as best as I can

Re: San Diego help!
Thanks everyone. My husband and I are actually going with my mom and his dad—him and his dad are going for the U.S. Open in golf and my mom and I have been talking about doing a little trip together—so we decided to just combine it all together. We're staying for six nights and will also be attending the Met game at PETCO Park. I want something centrally located, so I'm thinking the Gaslamp Quarter. Does that make sense? I'm figuring we're going to spend a day at the ballgame, a day at the San Diego Zoo and a few beach and shopping days or whatever else San Diego has to offer that I'm not aware of yet.
Steph, this was just decided tonight, so it's news to me too!

i think the best place to stay is by gaslamp quarters for what you want to do.. Horton plaza is by there for shopping, the zoo is not far.. the restaurants down there are really good.. lots of things to see within walking distance.. the beaches are a little far so you will need to take transportation to them. Check out the wild animal park if you have time!

Re: San Diego help!
I would definitely recommend staying in/near the Gaslamp if you want shopping and restaurants, and you'll be very close to Petco Park too. I can't give you a good hotel because I live nearby so I don't stay in hotels when I go down to the city, but I've been to the bar at the W, and it's nice!
You'll still need a rental car to get to the beach/zoo/U.S. Open, unless you want to get really creative with the bus schedules.
**DH just told me to say: don't stay at the Holiday Inn on 1st Ave. It's apparently very run-down inside.

Re: San Diego help!
We stayed at the Marriott Hotel & Marina. It's across the street from Petco park and the Gaslamp district, right on the water and the rooms were really nice. We found the location to be perfect as we could walk to everything.

I stayed at the Del Coronado for business once, I know it's pricey, not sure how much, but it was GORGEOUS!!!!
Def recommend. Even if you don't stay there stop by for a drink.
