K, I know you're public, but I had 30 days in my "bank" at my old school & basically took the entire month of June off (I was only 36 wks at that point). If I stayed there, I probably would have extended it through Sept, but I left for another school so I started right back in Sept. I'm not sure what the "official" policy is though (I guess I should find out......for the future).

For paid leave- you can use your sick days if you have enough for the 6/8 weeks after delivery. You can take 12 under FMLA- the extra 6/4 are not paid. Our contract also states that we can take up to 2 years of maternity leave at the districts PERMISSION. So for someone like myself in a shortage area we will not be given permission for that but someone in elementary would be- not fair in my opinion.

I just got short term disability insurance just for this matter.
I live in NC so when you go out on leave, you can use all your days that you have saved...and unless its the summer you are not getting paid. So if I were to give birth during the regular school year I'm just going to use my disability...I can not be unpaid for 6-8 weeks.

I am on maternity leave now. You can take up to 8 weeks (if c-section) paid if you have the days in your CAR. (You are NYC right?) Otherwise you can take as many days are are in your CAR, then borrow up to 20 days. Once those days are up you go on Grace for 30 days where you get paid for holidays and weekends. Once that is up the rest is unpaid unless you qualify for disability. Disability is through the union, the rest you talk to your payroll secratery about. FMLA runs concurrent with your days starting when you have the baby. So some of it is paid, and the rest us unpaid. If you need more then the 12 weeks then there is also childcare leave. In my district (on LI), you can take 6 weeks (natural birth) or 8 weeks (c-section). You will get paid for those days if you have enough sick days. If your maternity leave falls over a vacation, then you still get paid for those days but you don't have to use your sick days. You are entitled to insurance and other benefits for 12 weeks under FMLA. After the leave time, you can take up to 2 years of unpaid maternity leave per child.

Tenured- at least a year additional to any of the above you may have used... you can apply for additional time, but may or may not get it.

10 weeks paid, but I have to use my sick time. 12 weeks if it's a c-section. (same thing, only paid because you use your own sick time)

As long as you have it in your bank, we get 60 paid days leave

I think we have 6 weeks paid, up to a year unpaid, but we also have unlimited sick time, so if the doctor states that you need to be out for any reason, you are out, and paid for it.
When I had Lily last year, she was due at the beginning of June, but by the end of April, the commute was getting too difficult for me, and my legs were swelling. So I had a doctor's note that stated I could no longer work, and I left. I was out for May and June, and then July and August as well. I went back in September.
I know other teachers who had as long as six months paid due to medical concerns.

I was really lucky b/c I got my 6 weeks paid (using sick days) and then 12 weeks FMLA paid at 75% of my salary which was in my contract at the time I took maternity. It's not in there now. I just made it. I was able to take off from feb to the end of the year with only 1 wek unpaid! I will never see that again!

We get 4 weeks of paid maternity leave, but are entitled to FMLA, as well. We're a private school, and that's pretty good considering they don't HAVE to give us anything.
