Re: legal nurse consultant

I haven't hired legal nurse consultants in the past but I have considered it. I handle disability claims and I need to understand the medical records fully, so I have considered it for file summaries and workup. Unfortunately, it would be tough for me to use a nurse as an expert witness because the regulations are so biased toward MDs. That is changing a little but change is slow in my field.

Re: legal nurse consultant

Thank you so much!! Did you take the course already. The only thing I worry about with legal nurse is can you still practice in a hospital or is that a conflict of interest?

Re: legal nurse consultant

I have worked in medical malpractice, defense, as a paralegal for over 16 years & we have had nurses as experts. They are all mostly working the the field which keeps them current and more experienced to use as an expert witness. If you are looking to do that, send your resume to medical malpractice defense firms & to Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company and Physicians' Recriprocal Insurers - they are the two biggest malpractice insurers in NY. They compile lists of "acceptable" experts for outside defense firms to use.

Re: legal nurse consultant

Thank you for the info... Did you feel the opinions of the nurses were respected? I have heard a lot of places are using nurses more than doctors now..because they are less expensive..Thanks again

I don't know if PRI mentioned above makes lists (I know they didn't used to) but I know MLMIC (Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company) doesn't - when I was an examiner they never had nurse experts on a list it was a pain.

You could send your resume to a few of the defense and plaintiff firms and try that. I can tell you the med mal insurance companies pay for the experts for defense and they are pretty strict on what they will pay and only deviate if you are what they consider to be a "big" expert. I can tell you that a few of the firms have nurses that they use for paralegals to help with record review.

A lot of nurses and attorneys who leave the field do my old job - which was a claims examiner.

Re: legal nurse consultant

The firm I work for has been using nurses as experts for the past 2-3 years now. They are approved by MLM for their cases. They are ususally paid 200.00-250.00 an hour and $2,000.00 a day if they have to appear in Court. MLM has been usuing nurses on the Nursing Home cases we defend. Once a defense firm uses a nurse for the insurance company, they keep them on file or on a "list" of approved experts and we can use them again for another case.

See the city office never had nurses in the computer system - we would always have to contact the attorney on the case and find out who they used in the past then just get them approved. I know when I was in the LI office I had to contact the attorney b.c at the time we didn't have any nurses on our list - both offices should be the same as the expert list in the same for the whole company. I never worked with nursing homes so that group might have had a special list that wasn't in the computer.

Re: legal nurse consultant

Nursing home cases have boomed in the last few years. We took on about 20 cases, at least, last year. I have worked with MLM for over 16 years and they always claim not to have a "list" of experts, and they will not provide any such list to the defense firms, however, once you give them a name, they will tell you there're ok - that they have them on their approved expert list! It is like some game - it would make more sense if they provided the attorney with the list of experts they will approve of and then we could go from there!

Anyway, I would suggest contacting some firms - both defense and plaintiff. Nursing home cases are on the rise and the need for Nurse experts is definetly increasing.

You can FM me if you want and I can give you the name and address of the attorney in my office that works with Nurse experts.
