I don't know if it's a field you necessarily need a degree in, but I am pretty sure it's one that you basically need to start at the bottom, and then work your way up.

ITA. I have a Master's in HR, and teach HR grad classes, so I thought I might be able to get in at a higher level (I have experience recruiting, etc). Most companies want someone with experience as an HR Generalist, which is pretty much the lowest level HR position. I wouldn't bother taking classes.

So how would someone like me with no HR experience get into the field? Should i just send out resumes for HR generalist positions and see what happens? any suggestions would be helpful

That seems like your best shot. Here on LI the positions were pretty low-paying...I saw $30-35,000 for most companies on LI.

I think even that depends. All the places in the city I have worked at least, I can pretty much guarantee HR people weren't making THAT much. And certainly not entry-level HR.

Maybe if you are at a larger company.

That was for starting HR Generalists. People with no experience are making 6 figures in the city??

I teach HR classes in an MBA program and had a faculty meeting last week, and many of the other faculty were HR employees who were laid off. It seems like the first area to be cut when layoffs are occurring...
