How do you sign over a check to someone?

Hi,

I'm getting a check sent to me that I dont want to cash, I just want to sign it over to someone else so they can cash it.

How do I do this? Do I just sign my name on it and they sign underneath me? How does the bank really know t hat it was me and this person didnt steal the check and forge my signature (or do they not really care?)

Sorry for the silly question!

If the check is made out to you I believe ONLY you can sign it and it would have to be deposited in YOUR account.
ANyone can make that deposit, but wouldnt matter if he signed it as well.. he cant deposit it into his account unless your name is on his account as well.

I think you just sign the back, then the other person signs under you and they can cash it or deposit it.

I used to do this with dh before we were married and before we had joint accounts.

I tried to do this once with DH before we were married. The check was in his name and he signed it over to me. I tried to deposit it and they wouldn't let me until they verified his signature. Luckily, we had separate accounts at Citibank so I told them to look up his signature card.

They told me the only reason why they did it was bc they were able to verify his signature. Otherwise they wanted both parties present to verify signatures. Each bank may have their own policies.
