Besides NY - high paying states for teachers

what other states pay teachers well??

I know Cali does, but the cost of living is high also. I have also heard CT pays well.

Re: Besides NY - high paying states for teachers

CT does pay their teachers well. However, the pay also varies based on the area of the state a person is in. Teachers in Southern CT make more than in Northern or Western CT.

Same goes for NY though, LI teachers make way more than teachers in districts in upstate NY.

Re: Besides NY - high paying states for teachers

Teachers around DC (Fairfax, Arlington, Montgomery Counties) do pretty well. In fairfax, first year with a masters makes around $49k. COL is high though.

Now you know you just want to move down hereChat Icon Finance is huge down here, you'd make great $$ and there are some districts that pay really good for teachers...especially GOOD teachers!

Re: Besides NY - high paying states for teachers

i know this doesn't answer your question, but VA public school teachers don't make a lot of money. starting salary several years ago when i was in school was what i made as a TA in NY

Re: Besides NY - high paying states for teachers

NY area teachers are among the luckiest in the country.... i have a friend in NC that makes HALF of what i make with over 10 years of experience...

Basically, the higher the property tax rate in an area the higher the teacher salaries thanks to the disgusting, injust way education is funded in this country.

Besides above mentioned states, NJ has the highest property taxes in the country (comparable to LI, but the Whole state, whereas the low taxes upstate bring down our state-wide average of porerty taxes) and thus NJ teachers also make good money teacher-wise.

before we bought our house Mike had emailed all the counties in NC - they pay they told him he would get was way to low.

I think if he stays in the city, we'll end up just moving to western suffolk. although I love my house.

thanks for all the suggestions - it seems like anywhere teachers make decent money the COL is outrageous Chat Icon

This is true b/c Fairfield County has a significantly higher cost of living than the rest of CT.

There are other benefits to working as a teacher in CT. The unions are strong in CT and there are many laws protecting teachers. In CT, you won't work without a contract. If the new contract is not settled within a certain amount of time before the old one expires, the parties must go to binding arbitration. The raises tend to be very similar across the state.

I think he should still apply for positions on LI. He should get a position soon based on retirements and/or newly created positions!

Hang in there.

Re: Besides NY - high paying states for teachers

The one county in this area that I know pays well and the COL isn't too bad is Charles County, MD.

We may actually be headed out that way next year.

I'd stick with NY - we get the highest pay in relation to our quality of living. CA may have well-paid teachers, but it's very expensive to live there.

I taught near Rochester, NY. My salary was $28K. I think it went up to like $32K with my Master's. Chat Icon

If I went back to work right now, I'd be Master's step 5 I think...and making like $58K (i'm in central CT).

Re: Besides NY - high paying states for teachers

USNews published a book called something to effect of Everything You need to know on becoming a teacher. I read through it at BN for a little bit and it listed salaries by city, state and education level. It was good but I didn't want to pay 25 bucks for the book for those 5 pages.

Good Luck!

South Carolina doesn't pay too much either. DH and I are headed to Indiana when we leave the Marine Corps and the pay there (City of Indianapolis) is a little less than NY and the cost of living is way cheaper though.

When I was in CA (in one of those "my super sweet 16" schools) the starting salary was less than my starting NYC salary 6 years prior!
