San Diego - where to stay?
DH and I are planning a trip to San Diego. We're going to have a car, but I'd like to stay within walking distance of restaurants/bars or the beach (or both). We'll have a car to get around, but prefer walking as much as possible.
Any specific hotel recommendations (UNDER $200) are greatly appreciated.

Re: San Diego - where to stay?
del coronado isn't in walking distance - but a nice little water ferry ride. Nowhere close to $200 though.
Your best bet is the gaslamp district, but $200/night will be tough. Holiday Inn by the BAY (there is another right off the I-5 - that's NOT the one) could be in the price range and it's a nice walk to the gaslamp, marina, etc.
Just remember, most hotels in the downtown area have parking fees - ~$15-20/day - not included in the hotel stay and street parking downtown is next to impossible.

Re: San Diego - where to stay?
There's a great little inn across the street from The Del on Coronado Island. The beach at the Del is phenomenal and they have a great bar/restaurant set up. The inn will cost you much less...and you can still have the benefits of The Del.
Coronado Island is about a 5 minute drive from downtown San Diego....or you can ferry over.
Be sure to have a dinner night at The Boathouse down the street from The Del....great food and great atmosphere!
Oh, and visit the gardens next to the San Diego Zoo, if you have the opportunity. Beautiful grounds and terrific photo ops!

Re: San Diego - where to stay?
You probably won't find a decent hotel in the gaslamp district for under $200. There are a few hotels just outside of the gaslamp for under $200 though. Bristol Hotel and the Sofia Hotel had pretty good reviews on tripadvisor and other websites.

Re: San Diego - where to stay?
I stayed at The W in San Diego for work and it was great, blocks from the beach, good pool and great rooftop lounge.
It was a few years ago so not so sure what the rates are at this point.
Good Luck!

Re: San Diego - where to stay?
we stayed in old town at a marriott and loved it but that is not in the area you want - you want the gas lamp quarter - which i would recommend either the hyatt or the marriott there - both looked beautiful when we saw them and the area is perfect!
we loved san diego - and gas lamp was AWESOME - that was our first stop on our honeymoon!

Re: San Diego - where to stay?
We just went to San Diego in December. We stayed at the Hotel Del and Grand Hyatt.
Both of the hotel were lovely but the Grand Hyatt was Down town and you could walk almost ever where!
