I am ok with them having guns. If there are terrorists on the plane, then at least someone should. I have not seen marshalls on any flight I have been on.

Well on most flights there are 2 pilots...having 2 guns....

NOW if there was a need to use a gun, hence terrorist or hijacker, imo by the time they realize that theya re on board to use such weapons...it is tooo late...

The hijacker/terrorist would have MOST LIKELY taken hostages...request that the guns be turned over...AND NOW the TERRORISTS have the guns...NOT THE PILOTS...

Sky marshalls blend in with the other passengers. you wont be able to tell who is one

well, if the terrorist/hijacker are on the plane in the first place without a gun and are using a boxcutter or something to hold a hostage, what ammo do they have request the guns being turned over?
I would take one passenger being stabbed or cut over the whole plane going down b/c the pilots were not properly armed.

ETA: Of course I feel they should be properly trained to handle this.

Re: Spinoff from LIW

I don't think pilots should carry guns...Redhead pointed out the reasons I would list...but I'm not opposed to having an armed, undercover agent/flight marshall posing as a passenger in the event that something would happen.

It would have to be strictly regulated and confidential (obviously), but if you're going to give a person a gun to protect people in the event of a highjacker, then that should be the person's only responsibility -- not flying a plane while moonlighting as a security guard, if that makes any sense. Someone who is trained to specifically deal with those situations, and knows how to avoid having his gun taken from him.

Re: Spinoff from LIW

I would rather see them use tasers than guns and I think the flight attendants should have easy access to them if they are trained.

I think this makes perfect sense. Which along with the other reasons listed, why I do not think pilots should be armed.

Re: Spinoff from LIW

My understanding is that the pilots are armed just in case someone can make their way through the door to the cockpit. It is to defend themselves from an immediate threat to the controls of the plane. I don't think that they are armed to defend the cabin of the plane.

I don't know how many there would be, but I would still take 5 over the whole plane going down or crashing into a huge building, again.

true...but i don't see it WORKING AT ALL...i guess

Lets face it...we have the human factor...something terrorists do not have...

I do not care how much i was trained....if i saw a co-worker, fellow human being with a box cutter to their neck....
I think it is likely that someone would turn over a gun...if faced with the decision...

PLUS i think that having two guns on board...and the terrorist NOT being able to get around that is seriously underestimating their capabilities....
