NYC - TRS/TDA
I started teaching in NYC last year and was never enrolled in the TRS, which to what my coworkers have said TRS was automatically deducted from their checks from Day 1. I have tried a couple times to call and have not gotten thorough or had the time to hold on (esp since i can only pretty much call during work due to their hours). Now i want to get this taken care of and pay back my time in so I went on the site and tried to log into my account but my SS# is not recognized, tried calling the automative system to change pin and SS# is not recognized.
Im assuming that I need to just call and wait on hold to solve this, but im really annoyed that this was never done in the first place.
I requested the TDA forms online but i never got them and im wondering if it has something to do with my SS#.
I can just see that this is going to end up being a problem forever. This stuff never gets cleared up and im going to end up getting screwed in the end. NYC makes things so complicated, i never had this many complications working on LI.
anyone have any similar problems not being enrooled in TRS to start ?

Re: NYC - TRS/TDA
TRS is the teacher retirement system. that is different from your TDA, whuch is your tax deferred annuity. the TDA is optional, you can tell them how much you want from your check deducted and you decide how you want it invested. it's like the 401K inthe corporate world. the TRS is the pension, and you should have been automatically enrolled. 3% is automatically deducted from your pay from this. there is no TDA deducted from your check unless you specify how much and have set up an account and how you want it invested from an investement firm.
does this make sense or help???

Re: NYC - TRS/TDA
yes i know the difference, i have just been trying to get into both and been having troubles
BUt i found out today why im having trouble... i started off as a long term sub taking over in Nov and then the teacher resigning later in the year. my principal never actually appointed me to the position so now i have to go through getting him to send them that info so that i can get into the system. Im just hoping that my year last year Nov- jun counts to my tenure!

how frsutrating!!!! the DOE is so dysfunctional... they never seem to do anything right. it's like if you're not right on top of it, it doesn't get done and even then it's impossible.
GOOD LUCK!

1 (888)8- NYC- TRS
I know the wait has been a bit long because of all the questions about 55/25. (I've had to call myself twice this week). FYI you need to have sent them a copy of your birth certificate and a beneficiary appointment form before you can enroll in TDA. You won't get anywhere unless you do.
