My NEW RE consult at NSLIJ ( long, sorry)

Ok, so I went to See Dr. Chu who is part of Center for Human Reproduction at NSLIJ.

I have to say Im impressed. I wasnt FLOORED neccesarily at the differences in them versus RSONY, BUT I left there with a wealth of more knowledge about whats going on with me and I felt OPTIMISTIC for the first time about this crazy IF stuff...

First the DR was very detailed, explained so much. She felt I did NOT have "unexplained infertility"...She said DHs SA's showed a VERY low Morphology (shape) percentage, his other areas, and his count were perfect-high so it counters it some, but its definatly factor # 1.....She said my FSH was on the high side, abnormal for a 30 yr old. and Would even explain why I got PG so easily when I was younger, I was probably ovulating mutilpe eggs then and using up a lot of the reserve. She said its not severely high but is definatly factor #2. She also said that RSONY notes showed they were watching me for PCOS and that I NEVER knew. She said again its borderline but Factor #3. Add my weight into the mix and she said she was not surprised I was having a hard time AT all...and now they can focus on one thing at a time and get us PG!!

She said the fear of multiples RSONY had was silly, and that I was just limiting my chances of having ANY babies at this rate. She was ready to up the Clomid, felt it should have even been started at 100 and would only suggest a month , or two max before injectables.

She said she felt we were great IVF canidates, when I explained money was a HUGE factor and we could not afford it right now, she said "well why waste time talking about what we cant do and talk about what we CAN"....

I mean a TOTAL 180 from the advice I was being given before. It seemed like RSONY was IVF or nothing.

Dr Chu. said she is goign to put my name on the waiting list for the IVF grant ( thru NY state) but would really focus on getting more mature follies.

She even did an exam and a sono after the consult. She said she cant tell if I'm PG now, but nothing showed I wasnt either.

So If I get AF next week, I will need to have a HSG ( though she did agree with RSONY that it is almost 99% Not likly to be tubal) and a baseline sono/clomid at 100mg for the next IUI)

SO.....Bottom line. I feel so much more relaxed and hopeful and I felt like she listened and really was ready to do what WE were comfortable with.

It was a GREAT experince and I do wish I had started with them FIRST!

So onward we go......

Donna,

I am so happy for you. You listened to your gut which is why "the big being upstairs" gives us women's intuition. Some doctor's practices (am I am sure this is for every speciality) set a protocal and are just interested in keeping that protocal instead of treating the individual needs of each patient. We are all different and have different needs, isn't that supposed to be what medicine is all about? We are not a set recipie but unfortunately there are doctors who practice medicine like that.

I'll make the analogy to teaching. Sure I can just lecture about a topic in my Global History class but only my auditory learners willl benefit. What about the visual learners who can't remember a thing they hear unless it is accompanied by pictures, video? What about the kinestetic learners? Does this make my job more challenging?... YES! Every day! I have to diagnose their needs and change my teaching accordingly. If I don't truly meet the individual needs of every child am I really doing my job? NO, I am a miserable failure because the kids haven't learned! It's not about me, it's about the kids and it shouldn't be about the RE's it should be about the patients!!

Donna, I am so happy to here that you had a positive experience. Overall I have been so much happier at NDUH. You'll see... when you are in and out for blood and sono in 30 minutes and have seen the doctor, it will juste one more reason you'll be happy you made the switch. And hopefully a BFP at the end if it all will be even more reason. Here is to good things in 2006Chat Icon

What a difference !!! I am so glad you had a great consult at NSLIJ. Hopefully you are pregnant and won't need to go but it's good to know that someone will be working with your individual situation if you do.

Wow, what a difference! I can only dream of someone at RSONY giving me 1/4 of that info even after questioning them 100 times! Good Luck! Hope this does the 'trick' for ya! Chat Icon

Re: My NEW RE consult at NSLIJ ( long, sorry)

Oh and I wanted to add that not only did I not have to sign a freaking 40 page release in front of a nurse like RSONY for anything they may do, but they also didnt ask me ONE insurance question other then if IVF was covered, and I actually offered up that info.

THEN, today I realized I forgot to pay my co-pay.

What a change from the other place....That they didnt make "money" and "liability" such a major concern over patient health and confidence.
