i figured this would be a good place to ask a ?(elementary teachers)

ok..dh and i were talking last night. here is the situation.

i have a dd who is turing 2 and a dd who is 4 months.dh and i were saying that when they start school they will only be 1 grade below eachother..but now im thinking..

dd # 1 will be 5yrs old for 2 months before starting kindergarten.

dd # 2 will be 4yrs old for 3 months the year after dd # 1 (her bday is in dec)

does that sound right to you? or would dd #2 have to wait another year.

You will have to see when your schools cut off is as far as birthdays....I think "most" are in October...so your DD #2 might have to wait another year

eta: i'm in NC, so the cutoff in LI is different

ITA with Nicole - it depends on when the school cutoff is.

I think most schools on LI are Dec 1 though.

If dd's birthday is aftetr Dec 1st she will have to wait until the next year. LI cut off date is Dec 1st. NYC cut off date is Dec 31st.

Yeah, she'll probably have to wait the additional year, unless you start her in a private/parochial school. In VA the cut off is Sept. 30th... so my aunt started my cousin in Catholic School so he could start early (B-day is November 24th).

ETA: My aunt is a teacher, and my cousin was reading when he started Kindergarten, so she didn't want to hold him back.

Depends on the district - where I work there is no cutoff for kindergarten so last year I had a girl in my class who had a 12/31 bday and a boy who had a 1/3 bday - they were literally a year apart.

In the district where I live there is a 12/1 cutoff. DS was born on 11/18 so I will probably wind up keeping him out an extra year

My b/day is Dec. 19. My mom didn't want to hold me back another year, since she was (her b/day is Dec. 25) and didn't love it. She put me in a private kindergarten and then they took me for first grade!

I'm a December baby and loved being the oldest of all my friends! As a teacher, I see no reason to 'rush' kids into school (individual differences aside).

it depends on your district
some districts have to be 5 years old by dec 1st; and others are later in the month

if she doesnt make the cutoff, she'd have to wait until the following september

Yes it depends, I'm in Catholic school & the cutoff is 12/31.

if your district gives you the option, really weigh how mature #2 is before placing her into K at that young an age. as a former K teacher, it's amazing what a few months can do for a child. it's often maturity that can make the difference between a productive year and a disastrous year. see what she knows and how that stacks up with what is expected. see how she would react being in school full time for 8 hours...it's exhausting for the little ones and many can't handle it. it's the saddest thing when the immature K students are pushed to do things their little bodies and minds can't handle yet. most times, all they need is time on their side.
