Re: Getting Observed 5 times?

Is this an LI school district or NYC? Sometimes they come in and observe me without warning just to see what is going on with my classes. I am in NYC and they walk in and out of my room whenever they want toChat Icon

Eh, I don't think this is just an NYC thing. They do that everywhere (as far as I know... I'm on LI, and it happens to me a lot too -- unofficially, though. My chairperson just wanders in and out of our rooms a lot.)

Re: Getting Observed 5 times?

Not sure where you work but in NYC they can observe you as many times as they want (I think it is the same on LI as well). They have a certain amount that they are supposed to do and after that they can stop or keep going.

Re: Getting Observed 5 times?

I don't know where you teach but I would check your teacher contract. In my district it specifically states the number of times a teacher can be observed.

really? When I taught there and got tenure (last year) it was 4. 2 formal , 2 informal.

I am now in LI and got my 5th observation right after I had my post op for my 4th? And the 4th went really well.

So weird.

when i was in the city, i was NEVER observed formally... not even once! weird, right???!!! and i was in a good school. granted my classroom was right next to the principal's office, but i never had a formal observation. strange... i was only in the city for a year--- i am sure they would have had to do something more formal for tenure.

hey girl! :) wow...5???? i had three formal my first year, two formal obs. my second year, and three this year (my tenure year).

when i say formal, i mean the writetn up lesson plan and the pre- and post-ob. meeting.

my principal stopped in more than that, but nothing formal--usually just to say hi to me and the kids.

From what I know of in NYC...tenure is something you just kind of get....according to anyone I have spoken to who works in NYC. It seems like it's not really a big deal...just happens

I got tenure last year and my AP made a point to make sure I had 6 observations for the year.

People are denied tenure in NYC, it's rare, but it happens. Definitely not something you just get, especially nowadays with the Bloomberg/Klein regime. Look at what just happened to Eppebes! (Did I spell her name right? In NYC untenured teachers get observed 5 times-once by the principal and 4 times by an AP (at least on the HS level) and after tenure it is twice a year, though an AP or principal can come in at his/her leisure.

At my school last year it was commonplace to be observed 5-6 times. 4 by the chairperson (1 by october and then 3 in a row by the end of the year) and then 2x by the ap or principcal

for an untenured teacher, the minimum is 4 but there is technically no limit as to how many you can have

Re: Getting Observed 5 times?

In my district, on LI, there is a minimum number but no maximum number. Both my coteacher and I were up for tenure this year. We were observed together atleast 8 times and separately 1 or 2 times.

Re: Getting Observed 5 times?

Here is a link to the UFT website regarding observations. I know that not all administrations follow contract guidelines (legal or not) so it may or may not pertain to your situation.

I didn't double check that this is the most recent information but it's from Feb 2007.

Good luck!

Re: Getting Observed 5 times?

yeah, I know in NYC it is a minimum of four- any others can be a letter to file.

And, there were a lot of people who were spoken to about tenure, and one person didn't get it. My old Principal was Napoleon though. Chat Icon

You were tenured in NYC and then went to the suburbs? They might up it, since they have to decide on tenure for you in 2 years instead of 3. I know when I went out to LI from NYC, they came to see me more than the people I started with b/c of this.

HAHA i think they all make up there own rules!

I work in NYC.

Last year I was observed 4 times f1 formally announced and 3 unannounced. This was my first year teaching

This year my coteacher and I have been observed 1 time this year. My coteacher and I both inquired if we would be observed anymore, since for both of us this is only our 2nd year. We were told probably notChat Icon they would just do one "letter type" one which will be collecting our students math logs and writing us an observation on those.

Im in good school but this seems so strange to me. Plus they will count anything as an observation. ie: if you took a workshop and made a powerpoint presentation on how to make something, or write something up from a workshop, or they will collect student work

Its comical

To add... a teacher that left my school and is now working on LI is required to get observed 6 times as well. Every district has there own rules
