Training for a marathon
So I think I want to run a marathon- but I am a long way away. The most I have ever run is 3 miles.
I am thinking about doing a half marathon in Hartford this November with a friend. What do you recommend I do to train?
I usually run 4 days a week. 3 of the days are work days and I only run 2 miles. I am restricted with time because I am a working mom and my DH doesn't get home until way after dark.
I live in Manhattan, if that matters.

Re: Training for a marathon
Good news, a 1/2 marathon is very doable, even for a running novice. More good news, you've given yourself plenty of time to build up to it.
The race itself will be the easiest part of the whole process. The training is the toughest part. It requires not only a lot of physical stamina, but also mental stamina and determination.
Assuming that you're in good physical health, there's plenty of training programs on the internet which can help you achieve your goal. You may consider running one or two shorter races before the Half, just to get used to running with others and the crowds. Since you live in Manhattan, there are plenty of running opportunities. I'd recommend joining a running club. You don't always have to run with them, but they can motivate you. They are also good when you need to do late-night or early-morning runs and you want to find a partner (especially if running during darkness hours).
Good luck.

Re: Training for a marathon
Thanks. I actually plan on starting to run some 5Ks this spring with my sister, and then working my way up.
