Re: who is using a doppler?
I use one, and I'm pretty sure I could hear it around 16 weeks too. It is definately a swish...swish sound (the reason for the swishing sound is because it is actually picking up the sound of the blood moving through the system). One of the problems though is that it can also pick up your heartbeat. You will know if it is yours or the baby's by the rate. Yours will be slower and you can tell its yours because it will sound like you think your heartbeat would sound. The baby's will be much faster -- about twice as fast as yours.

Re: who is using a doppler?
I still have mine but I started hearing her heartbeat around 9-10 weeks. I just listened to it last night for the 1st time in about a week. It sounds like a little horse galloping. Its much faster than my heartbeat (which is normal). Mine is about 85bmp and her rate had been about 160bmp all along.
When I first started using the doppler it would take me 10-15 mins to find her, but once I got the hang of it, I could find her in a few seconds.

Re: who is using a doppler?
I first heard the little heartbeat at 9 weeks too. It was soo fast, and took a good 15 minutes to find.
I just used mine again the past couple days and it's so loud and easy to find, except when she runs from it. I am 23 weeks.
My tip-make sure you are lying down, and use the gel. Also go slow when you move it, so the doppler can capture any sound. The heartrate of the baby is so much faster than yours. My heartbeat is about 70-75 BPM, the baby is 142
